El Mandril off the air

Ricardo Sanchez (a.k.a. "El Mandril") was off the air today on La Raza, as well as on his affiliate stations. He is in the middle of a contract re-negotiation. Some speculate that he could be headed to KSCA, which has been playing music since giving El Piolin the boot earlier this year.

Wow, SBS never seems to hold onto their big talents before losing it to Univision!

First Enrique Santos, then Luis Jimenez, now possibly el Mandril — all DJs who have been number one in their markets and are now syndicated in various markets. They can't catch a break!

Mandril is back... on his affiliates. But not in LA, SF, or Chicago.

The move to Univision looks more likely now.

That's funny! (particularly when some of those affiliat market stations are in direct competition with UVN.

This morning they had a new morning show... El Show de Toño. It sounds like he's in LA & SF.

La Opinion has published a couple of follow-up stories, including one that alleges (without offering ANY supporting evidence) that there might have been fraud in the high ratings that El Mandril garnered:

http://www.laopinion.com/entretenimiento/radio-donde-esta-ricardo-sanchez-el-mandril

And, this article, that indicates Toño has taken over for the time being at La Raza:

http://www.laopinion.com/show-tono-sustituye-mandril

The article also includes a short quip from El Cucuy who claims that "No han salido locutores buenos. Punto y se acabó. [Durante] Los últimos 20 años lo que han hecho es que han venido imitando a El Cucuy, han salido un montón de imitadores de El Cucuy y muy malos pa’ cavarla, y la gente se da cuenta de eso." El Cucuy claims that there hasn't been a decent new jock in the past 20 years, and that all who have done morning radio have imitated him.

Bitter, party of one, your table is ready.

Mr. Venta noted that earlier today, and has now posted a follow-up item (at http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/86811/contract-dispute-leads-to-claims-of-ratings-fraud). Just in case, the appropriate text from the original La Opinión story (again, at http://www.laopinion.com/entretenimientofamosos/article/20131116/En-donde-esta-El-Mandril) is...

Separately, I dug up a slightly newer story from La Opinión's sister publication in Chicago, specifically concerning what happened there; see http://www.laraza.com/El-Mandril-sale-del-aire-en-Chicago.

Updated because I inadvertently linked to a different version of the La Opinión story mentioned earlier--although I'm not sure if there are any differences within the text; just in case, the original link is http://www.laopinion.com/entretenimiento/radio-donde-esta-ricardo-sanchez-el-mandril.

I had written two Rewind features for LARAdio.com today, January 20. Don chose to run the one about the death of Deirdre O'Donoghue but did not run the other one---nor did I expect him to. Here it is...and how quickly the past year went by!

LARadio Rewind: January 20, 2014. One week after his contract with KLAX expired, Ricardo "El Mandril" Sánchez takes over the morning show at KXOS. His program was syndicated to 39 other markets in the United States and Grupo Radio Mexico hoped to expand syndication to 40 additional markets in the US and Mexico by year's end. Even though Sánchez had been on KLAX for seven years and had the most-listened-to morning show in Los Angeles and Orange County, Spanish Broadcasting System had taken him off the air on November 1, 2013, but he continued to use the KLAX studios to record programs for other markets. His manager, Fernando Schianterelli, said that the move was a "pressure tactic" while he and Sánchez attempted to negotiate a contract extension. There were also rumors of ratings fraud and tampering but nothing was ever proven. Sánchez moved to KXOS, where he can be heard from 5 to 10 am Monday through Saturday and online at http://radiocentro939.com/
