When did WXXX/Hattiesburg disappear? I noticed that 1310 is apparently silent, and I know it has been for a long time, but was just curious.

I still have an old WXXX T-shirt that I won from a remote they were doing at Peps Point water park back around 1979 or so. At the time I think the format was some sort of oldies format but with a top 40ish presentation. In the 1980's the station switched to Christian music. I haven't heard the station since the late 80's or early 90's.
Also off the air are 890 AM and 1230 AM. 890 fried the transmitter several years ago, and I don't think 1230 AM every came back after the original WHSY went bankrupt. The FM 104.5 came back but 1230 went away.

I knew a bunch of people who worked there in my radio days. I know it's been gone a long time now- but when I was there (WFOR in the mid-70s) it was a hot station.

The story there is not much different than a number of smaller markets, with stations that once were powerhouses dying a painful death.

WHSY wasn't bought out of bankruptcy but the FM was. 890 will again return shortly as a black gospel. WXXX left around 1985.

What about the WORV 1580? I've driven thought Hattiesburg several times and it was off the air. I've noticed that AM stations down there don't get out very well. Mostly static by the time you are in Collins. WORV barely makes it out of the city limits. Is it just poorly maintained stations or is it something to do with the area?

They moved sites from by the river to a few blocks nearer to town. In that move the tower got higher and the ground got smaller.
So it's a lesser site than what they had before, but it doesn't "flood". So with the poor conductivity and a compromised ground that
is the result. 950 does rather well.
