Cumulus to sell KABC, KLOS site

What a smart move: Cumulus will sell its longtime 45,000 sq.-ft. facility and property for the stations on South La Cienega Boulevard in LA. The 10-acre site is near a stop on the Expo Line rail route connecting downtown LA and suburban Culver City, reports the LA Times:

Seems to me there were some oil wells right across the street. Wonder if there's oil on the property. Other than in the hair of the salesmen. :)

The real issue here is that an acquisition of CBS Radio will demand several billion dollars and create an overflow of FCC ownership limits in many of the markets with New York City and Los Angeles being just two of them when you think about how huge CBS Radio is. As a result, they'll be forced to sell a few of the stations anyway, which could include KABC and KLOS.

With regards to the land itself, I think finding another plot of land with sufficient soil conductivity to sustain the ground radial system on the KABC 790 AM transmitter could be a challenge given the geography, geology and cityscape of the Los Angeles area.

Re-location of the KABC AM towers could cost MORE than they will make in cash. Sell off ONLY the office building and parking lot - keep the AM tower -- just where it is. That means pure profit. No loss in relocation of the AM towers - both in cash and operation of the 790 AM. But -- that is too much to ask for or expect from the idiots that run broadcast groups these days. If there was oil on or under the KABC site - they would have long ago dug up every inch of the property before now. And - under present FCC rules any relocation of KABC AM would mean both reduction in power and coverage. KABC might just as well give up the license. If the ratings suck now -- they will just keep getting worse - if they move the AM station to any other site. Replacement of the needed size plot for the AM towers would cost MORE than any sale would bring. This is a LOSS - LOSS - LOSS deal -- unless they just sell off the Studio-offices and parking lot and keep the towers just the way they are.

The bulk of the 10 acre site is dedicated to the AM towers and ground system. There are likely only a few acres, if that, that don't have radials under them.

This is a move very much in parallel with the recent KHJ move from the same area. You find another station's site and diplex or triplex into it. the station goes to a rental model, and the only expense is a one-time technical expenditure on a good directional consulting engineer and a new phaser as well as the diplexing set-up.
