November 2013 Los Angeles Ratings

The Nielsen Audio ratings for Los Angeles are now out: KIIS remains at number one, KBIG remains at #2, and the once-mighty KFI is mired at #9. There were sizeable gains for KNX and KXOS and a fairly large drop for KOST, but, if past years are an indication, the non-stop Christmas music should put KOST at number one in December. I was looking back through the past few years of PPM ratings---yeah, I print 'em and save 'em---and saw that Hot 92.3 KHHT was listed as "Urban AC" for a few years, then as "Rhythmic Oldies," and now as simply "Oldies." The station's format hasn't changed so why has Arbitron/Nielsen changed the name of the format? And why was it ever considered to be "Urban AC"? David?

The format names are provided by the posting websites, not by Arbitron. That's why the same station may be listed with different format names on different sites.
 
Looks like K-Earth 101, is holding steady at a 4.2 since September, the month the format switched to more 80's and less 60's right after that Labor Day countdown. 5th place for KRTH!

More important, October and November were 12th in 25-54, up from 15th and 16th in the two prior books.

(Only ten days of the "September" book included the post-change KRTH music; the October books started on 9/12)
 
I'm anxious to see the December book so we can see how KRTH's ratings are affected by dropping Beatles/Beach Boys/Monkees/Supremes/Four Seasons in favor of Journey/Aerosmith/Bon Jovi/Madonna/Bruce Springsteen. Will the ratings go up? Will the ratings go down? Wll Michael be here to point out that the ratings dropped overall but went up in the coveted "target demo"? :)

And will they simply be cannibalizing themselves by taking away from 80s station JACK, which also plays mostly 80s. (CBS owns both stations.)

Hey, maybe the guy who "saves forgotten formats," Saul Levine, will adopt real Oldies at 105.1!
