Columbia musings

I was reading through the FCC site in the FM query section and noticed some interesting things in the Columbia area.

L&L has an app to bring WHXT 103.9 closer to Columbia with a tower in Swansea.

WXRY has 2 apps; one on 99.1 for the northwest and 100.7 for the southeast side of town to simulcast 99.3 in Columbia. Yay Steve!

One other note is Clear Channel has a translator app for Columbia at 105.5

Please don't say app. I was trying to imagine why a smartphone user would need one app for 99.1 and another for 100.7.

Then I realized what was going on.

WHXT has needed a better signal for a long time. I've wondered how they were so popular with such a weak signal. Having never been to Columbia, I don't know exactly what it sounds like.

HOT 103.9 is the only Urban Hip-Hop station in the Columbia area. They don't have competition so it's safe to say they win by default. I remember when they first launched, they gave BIG DM a real Urban war playing nonstop hip-hop copying the format from HOT 107.9 Atlanta including former jocks from Atlanta.

I don't remember who was first but WXBT was there for a while. I can't believe with the superior signal that's not the station that survived.
