iBiquity Digital Corporation, the developer of digital HD Radio Technology for AM and FM audio and data broadcasting, announced this week from the LA Auto Show that the 2014 Civic is the first Honda vehicle to launch integrated audio and real-time traffic information using the HERE mapping service, the BTC, and HD Radio Technology. The 2014 Honda Civic will arrive at dealerships in December.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't buy a Honda to begin with and definitely not just to get this technology. There are a number of non-HD stations giving traffic alerts every few minutes during commute hours so this technology seems slightly redundant. And if I want immediate DOT info I can use my phone or PC.

Going either further: I would AVOID buying any car with IBOC traffic, imagine trying to navigate around a big city with your traffic continually dropping out? I have a Tom Tom and even though it's very reliable (something I'm sure NO one would say about IBOC traffic) when it does drop out it is a PITA.

I'm rather surprised to see Honda start offering HD since I've have read that HD radio reliability on the road is more like Yugo than Honda.

It seems to vary greatly depending upon distance from transmitter and topography. No problems here in the Phoenix metro.

Phoenix metro might have great HD coverage.
Many (probably most) parts of the US are not within range of an HD radio signal.
HD radio was a waste of time and money.
Analog and digital cannot co-exist on the same channel. On the AM side, HD causes hissssssssss on the analog signal.
On the FM side, HD causes the same thing on the stereo subcarrier.
In both cases, HD causes interference to the first adjacent channels.
IBOC needs to go away.
The FCC should explain why these IBOC systems were ever permitted.
They DO cause harmful interference ... the same interference which is prohibited by FCC regulations.

The FCC dropped the ball on both HD radio and digital TV IMHO. Neither were well thought out technologies nor were either tested adequately. The biggest difference is that digital TV affected virtually everyone in the country and HD radio practically nobody. I am one of the many disaffected by digital TV despite living just 8 miles line of sight from the transmitter towers in an area of good weather. I did find a niche in HD radio as a member of a now ignored demo and will continue to enjoy it until, like others, it is ripped out of my hands by the malevolent advertising industry. It will then go the way of analog radio.

Last I remember the boys were proprietors of an apothecary shop in ancient Rome: Larricus, Moehicus and Curlyque.

Hondas last forever. It is quite likely that a 2014 Honda will outlive HD radio. I had a '92 Honda Accord till last July that was still running well on the day I sold it.

Your 92 Accord probably would have outlived HD.
