What's going on with V101.1 (or V101) now?

I notice that KHYL has went from being an rhythmic/urban oldies station as of this month to a rhythmic ac. It simplified its branding from "V101.1" to just "V101" (its sister R&B station in Memphis KJMS went thru the similar change in branding), and dropped its "R&B and Old School" slogan for "The Beat of Sacramento." Now that's just a shame that it had to go top-40 ish because Sacramento already has KSFM, KHHM and KDND for the pop radio fix, although KSFM is 75% hip hop/rnb and 25% pop. Looks like some listeners are set to migrate to KDEE for good.

btw I have not found any official confirmation if KHYL has adjusted its format outside the complaints off its Facebook page from listeners so anybody can chime in. IMO if KHYL has to go down that route I think it should change its name because the "V" to me is associated more with R&B stations like KHYL (before the change), WVEE in Atlanta, or WVAZ in Chicago.

I also noticed V101's logo is now sporting the same one that several Clear Channel outlets like WISX/Philadelphia and WNIC/Detroit have. So if anything, chances are that they just saw a opportunity to go after the 25+ females that have moved on from KSFM but at the same time siphon off the audience from KZZO and KBZC by playing upbeat Rhythmic currents. This will be interesting to see how this plays out in Sacramento.

I actually like the new format. I especially like the occasional Michael Franti and Spearhead. Of course I liked the old format too.

So I listened to "the beat of Sacramento" for the first time today. Interesting mix of music, not sure how I feel about it yet.

So now they sound like KSSX in San Diego. I also notice KOCN in Salinas going the GenX 90's Old School route like KFBT in Fresno. KHHT Los Angeles and KISQ San Francisco are only Clear Channel stations in Cali that focus on Rhythmic Oldies.

POP FM In Reno (KWNZ)

I heard V101... It sounds like they heard POP FM (KWNZ) in Reno. POP FM signed on back in May and that station is awesome!
80's & 90's R&B/POP, with retro imaging to match. I think V101 might be doing almost the same thing. I think it will be a winner with upper demo females.

You're all talking about this station like it's a single entity. Companies CLUSTER these stations together to sell them as a group to advertisers. They care about nothing else except formats that appeal to certain age demographics. It doesn't matter to them if there are already 3 other stations in the market doing a similar format....it's about a CLUSTER buy for the advertiser! Which is why radio will continue to implode!

Camron - we can agree that radio will continue to implode. And we'll be here to talk about it until it does.
