Bonneville fail, KOOL & KWSS-LP score

Bonneville sure knows how to ruin a good format. No more talk radio. And then flip 98.7 to sports, flipping off all the doctor's offices in town.

It's wonder KOOL continues to do so well. Run a station like you WANT listeners to stay and not flee to Pandora or Sirius/XM and...they'll stay.

Congratulations (again) to KWSS-LP for its continued growth in the East Valley. (KWSS-LP was in fact the first terrestrial AM/FM in town to play "Royals", and they still take more on-air listener calls on a given day than KTweetAR and KFYI combined....and they're not even a talk station.)

I don't think it is a wonder KOOL stays near the top year after year. It is one of the only stations playing the classic hits that the majority of people still like. Compared to what it once was, it isn't as good - in terms of air talent or music lists, but it is closer than any other station in the Phoenix metro. As it continues to age into the dark recesses of post 80's songs people like me will gradually tune out and search for something closer to the music we like. I have already switched to KEZ-HD2 which is largely 70's. I listen to KOOL only when driving the car that does not have digital radio. If KEZ-HD2 were not available I would likely buy a subscription to XM/Sirius.

I am well beyond the demo that radio in general and KOOL in particular is after but before they cross me off as a does-not-matter I might point out that many of the 30 and 40-somethings feel about the music as I do and have made similar choices.

Don't blame XM/Sirius or Pandora for stealing your listeners. You are giving them away.

That's exactly my point: I don't blame XM/Sirius or Pandora for stealing listeners. I do, however, blame the idiot consultants and producers for chasing away listeners - of all ages and demos - from once-trustworthy, once-flagship terrestrial AM/FM's like KTAR, KOY (now-defunct), and 103.9 (essentially now-defunct.) How the heck did this city's radio dial go from 620 AM KTAR (when it was still legit talk radio) and KUKQ and KSTM and KOPA to the diarrhea of the airwaves we have now? We're talking about corporations that invest millions of dollars for attorneys and engineers and broadcast equipment with no budget whatsoever, let alone any interest, in retaining the listeners who are fleeing their stations in droves. PPM confirms "nobody" listens to the radio anymore, and so they program accordingly.

Hmmm...I don't think that's what PPM is saying. The thing I've noticed is the extreme slow growth of Sirius during all this time. It's still less than 10% of the radio market. Growth at Pandora has also slowed. If people are "fleeing....stations in droves," they're not going to Sirius or Pandora. And they may not be "fleeing" anything, but just changing their listening habits because of personal factors like their own changes in lifestyle. Just because a particular station isn't doing what you like doesn't mean they don't care. It's a whole lot more complicated than that.

Indie:

103.9 had higher numbers with Hot AC than it ever had with Alternative in PPM. Now it's part of a top 5 (in demo) station ...

I don't disagree about less localism in PPM. You are right about that. Radio needs to remember what their legal I.D. says. They shouldn't be repeaters for programming from another market.

BTW, KOOL is struggling right now. Well out of the top 10 in demo... as is that format in a number of markets nationwide.

Mountain is pulling more from KOOL and KSLX than the more AC sounding Peak ever did.

KPKX was a revenue issue I believe. They needed to protect the Sports $$ ... and CC jumped on it immediately.

I think the issue KOOL and other classic hits stations are trying to deal with is the aging younger demo. As the kids of traditional KOOL listeners age into the KOOL target demo, will they be willing to listen to their parent's radio station, regardless of the music they play? Difficult social question.
