Cumulus and CBSFM

If you read the rumors, what are the chances The cloud will actually nab 101.1?

Isn't CBS one of the few companies that hasn't been bought out by a major conglomerate network of stations like a clear channel or cumulus?
Music wise, CBS has ALWAYS been a favorite station of mine, all the way back to the cousin brucie days. I'd really hate to see it get gobbled up by an un caring, bottom line company.

But if there are truth to the rumors, it is interesting that scott would flee The cloud, if only to get gobbled up by them a year later.

One of the reasons that CBS Radio was never bought by one of the major groups is because it IS one of the major groups... The third largest behind Clear Channel and Cumulus.

Those Cumulus/CBS merger rumors were flat out fabrications. Never gonna happen. And CBS CERTAINLY would never part with just one station in market #1.

The rumors are like most rumors: Partly true, partly false. If you examine how CBS operates, each of their markets has been built around a single platform, called CBSlocal. That is a sales platform, made up of radio, TV, and interactive. But there are markets where CBS doesn't own a TV station, or enough radio stations to make a difference. Those are the fringe markets they'd consider selling, if the price was right. But at the same time, many of these are lucrative markets where they'd also be happy to buy or trade for properties if the price was right. But with all the cash they have on hand, and a stock price that's trading at an all time high, they aren't really motivated to sell. One thing seems clear: CBS definitely won't be selling anything in the Top 3 markets any time soon.

the last part is what bothered me.....why would they sell even one station unless they wanted to get out of the radio biz? nice to see the rumors are false though.

Scott didn't totally flee Cumulus. He is still doing the Oldies Channel gig which is Cumulus owned and distributed.
Really strange that CBS would allow Shannon to work for both companies. Adds fuel to the rumor about the Cloud taking CBS Radio.
Leslie Moonves wants a movie studio and cares nothing about radio. The only reason radio is still part of the portfolio is cash flow. Sumner Redstone likes the cash flow. But Sumner is 90+ and will not own the company forever.
Lew and John see themselves as the radio alpha dogs and adding CBS Radio would just about seat them on the right side of gawd. I just don't see $5-8B in capital waiting for those brilliant Dicky boys. The money guys have to be thinking Lew has a full plate right now and would have a hard time handling an additional operation of that size successfully. At least right now. Maybe a year or so down the road...??

Don't forget that CBS Sports Net is programmed by CBS, but sold and distributed by Cummulus. There is already some synergy there...
