Cumulus danger signal

Cumulus Media busts ups its news/talk simulcast in Pensacola to bring classic hits to the market. “News Talk Radio 100.7” WCOA-FM is now “The Jet 100.7” with WestwoodOne-syndicated Bob & Tom in mornings. Cumulus Media Networks director of programming operations Jerry King joins the station as program director and as operations manager of the five-station cluster. WCOA-FM had a 2.6 share (12+) in the fall 2013 Nielsen survey.

What does this predict for AN 106.7 ? The station in Pensacola had a 2.6. AN is at 1.5 and has been consistently #20 in the market since they started the all news operation last year. How long will
Cumulus put up with a 1.5 here in Atlanta ? Any predictions when the station returns to music, like what
just happened in Pensacola ?

No real correlation there. Much of WCOA’s conservative talker programming already aired in Mobile on Clear Channel’s 710 WNTM.

My sense is that Cumulus is going to be beefing up its news operations pretty soon. While it may not be a big ratings-getter, the format may deliver the kind of demos and the kind of advertising environment that will pay off. That's what has happened to all-news stations in other markets. I hear that even though the Houston all news station is still struggling in the ratings that Radio One has managed to make decent money with it.

BigA, why would Cumuluss do that when news staffs cost money. That's just stupid talk that they'll grow it? Aren't they cutting the news programming at their stations as opposed to building it?

106.7 has already gone Talk in middays and has Braves games now. News isn't cutting it in Atlanta and as soon as they come up with something cheaper to put there it'll be gone.

I never see any marketing for 106.7. Just one billboard on I-85. Do they run any TV? I don't watch much local TV and could be missing it.

I like the product. I'm guessing they have an awareness issue.

Even at a 1.5, you can bet they're making money. All news demos and psychographics are moneymakers.
