CBS Thursday Night Football.

Will this be like NBC's Sunday Night Football when NBC delays putting shows on that night when CBS airs NFL games on thursday nights this fall?. Next thing will be the NBA airing NBA games on sunday afternoons from November-June (especially in Nov-Jan when the NFL season is active).

I read a few weeks ago that CBS is committed to airing The Big Bang Theory's next season at the start of the season, meaning that it will be a day other than Thursday. There were no comments made about whether they would move or delay the season premiere's of the other Thursday night shows.

There will undoubetly be an impact to several shows, but exactly which shows impacted won't be known until CBS outlines its fall schedule. I realize that's a fairly obvious statement, but I look for CBS to defer the fsall debut of some of their weaker shows until Thursday Night Football is done, and then possibly shift BBT back onto Thursday depending on how it does on a different night.

Is NFL Network getting out of the business of televising live NFL games or something ??

If this thread is true, I wouldn't look for Nantz & Simms on Sunday Afternoons anymore if I were you (They'll be the Thursday Night guys)

Cheers & 73 :D

NFL Network will do the second half of the season on Thursday night. It's a response to criticism that so few people actually were able to watch the Thursday night games because of NFLN carriage.

Moving only the 1st half of the season to CBS won't change that (Both are in denial if they think it will)

Cheers & 73 :)

Won't change what? Many more people will be able to view the first half of the season. I'm sure the NFL received a decent price from the Eye for this and the Eye believes they can build a franchise somewhat akin to what NBC has done on Sunday nights. I think this is a good thing. My cable company only recently added the NFLN.

This Thursday Night Football package with CBS is only an one-year deal, and CBS is handling all production of the telecasts, including the ones that will air exclusively on NFL Network in the second-half of the season. Supposedly, Nantz and Simms will not only work Thursdays, but they'll still work some Sunday afternoon games as well.

It won't change the fact that those same people won't be able to see the 2nd half of the season though. That's what I'm saying.....

As for building a franchise, CBS already has a sports network. All they need to do is sell it to cable & satellite carriers like Comcast is doing with NBCSN & the NHL

Cheers & 73 :)

But that's what the NFL Network is. This is for broadcast TV.
Except CBS has the CBS Sports Network which they've done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING with ever since CBS took full control of it & put it completely under the CBS Sports umbrella

Add to the fact that CBS botched the Sony Open Tennis Tournament (See the thread elsewhere on here about that) & that just compounds things as they could've used that & The Tennis Network as springboards to do to them what NBC Sports has done to Golf Channel - BUILD A FRANCHISE !!!

Now THEIR ONLY HOPE is with the NFL since they don't have the rights to anything else except NCAA Basketball & SEC Football (And EVEN THAT is on shaky ground with ESPN launching the SEC Network soon) - And they're gonna blow THAT too by moving Thursday Night Football solely to broadcast TV (Making fans of other TV shows suffer in the process) just so a few grannies & other penny-pinchers can avoid having to get cable ?? Seriously ??

I think CBS should stick TNF on CBS Sports Network & syndicate it to local stations of the teams involved as per NFL guidelines & leave it at that

JMO.....

Cheers & 73 :)

It's one of these chicken & egg things. You can't get cable companies to carry your channel without great programming, and you can't get great programming without being on lots of cable systems. It takes a long time to build ESPN. So the NFL doesn't need CBS SportsChannel or anyone else to put TNF on cable. That's why they have the NFL Network. They need the huge platform of the CBS TV Network. That's also the only platform that is big enough to pay the rights fee. Other than ESPN, of course.

You're right it is kind of a chicken & eggs type of thing BUT UNLESS CBS makes some hard choices & take some chances by putting stuff like TNF on CBS Sports Network, THEY MAY AS WELL GIVE UP THE GHOST on it as NO ONE will wanna be on it

That's what ESPN did when they got MLB rights & convinced the NFL to let them create SNF. NBCSN (When it was known as Versus) did much the same thing with the NHL. Look what's happened as a result of those events

So it's not like it's impossible & unprecedented ya know :)

Cheers & 73 :)

All 14 Thursday games and 2 Saturday games will air on NFL Network and be produced by CBS. The first 8 Thursday night games (airing in Sept+Oct) will be simulcast on both CBS and the NFL Network. I don't think the calendar has been officially set/announced, but it appears that CBS would air its eighth game on the last Thursday of October, which is generally when November Sweeps begin. It will be interesting to see whether they get marquee games or whether it will be a random mish-mash.

I guess this also means that NBC keeps the "Thursday Opener" game of the season, which is usually during Labor Day week.

The NHL was in a very different position. No major network wanted the NHL, and they spent a few years with no broadcast contract. And the results were predictable: Very few people watch the NHL on NBCSN. The main benefit they got was an occasional games on the NBC TV Network, which is what they wanted.

Bottom line is the NFL doesn't need any other cable channel to carry their games when they have their own channel. For CBSSN, it's not their choice. They can try to put TNF on the channel, but the NFL will say no.
