The Bessemer and Clanton schools applications are intriguing: new high school stations at a time when many schools are getting out of radio. I don't believe there has ever been a licensed HS station anywhere in Alabama before, so if they make it to the air they'll be pioneers in that regard.

I know as a tribal govt., the Poarch Creek Indians can and did get two licenses. With the same COL, they probably won't simulcast, so I wonder what they will do with them.

I know that the Alabaster station intends to be a full-service station with local sports. Good for them.

I believe Glenn Vocational HS in Birmingham had a licensed 100 watt fm station in the 1950s & 60s.

my dad took tv/radio repair there on the GI bill in the 50s and my brother was a conventional student there in the 60s/early 70s. they both talked about the radio station. I would hope that it was licensed.

I checked the radio directories (Broadcasting Yearbook, Vane Jones, etc.) at David Eduardo's site and can't find a licensed station fitting that description.

Maybe you've seen this 1974 clip of James Spann (with hair!) as a high school student at an unlicensed station at Tuscaloosa Central HS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaPUgcZBXeE

I grew up less than a mile from where Glenn High School was, and I never recall a radio station broadcasting from there, either on FM or AM.

I know Jeff Davis HS in Montgomery had an unlicensed station for a time in the 1990s. The Montgomery Advertiser did a story on it. There's probably been quite a few unlicensed stations that came and went - and maybe cranked up the power when no one was looking - and have largely been lost to time. Since you can't hear a Part 15 transmitter off campus, and can't listen on campus, it seems like the novelty factor would wear off quickly.

If I'm not mistaken, the Bessemer (WVBC-LP) and Clanton (WSMX-LP) permits are the first licensed stations in the state assuming they make it to the airwaves, and it comes at a time when many high schools are divesting themselves of their stations to colleges and religious broadcasters.

The Birmingham 95.1 CP got call letters today: WSYP-LP. The tower is actually listed as being in Center Point, near the Civitan Park.

Thanks

Hi, Im a student from the LCTC in Clanton's Electronics Department. And Yes we're on the air now. It's 98.3 Super Mix WSMX. We're very proud of our station, and glad to be pioneers in having a licensed HS station. So thanks for noticing our station, and have a nice day!

Congratulations on the achievement!
Here's a newspaper article from the Clanton Advertiser about the station: http://www.clantonadvertiser.com/2014/04/04/career-tech-center-launches-radio-station/

I'll have to check your signal out next time I'm in the area.

That's great news! I'll be sure to listen for it next time I pass through Clanton on I-65. The local paper did a nice write up on the station, too. I'm setting up a data & history page set up for the station on my site, feel free to reply to this thread if you have any additional info you'd like me to add, like a Facebook page link or anything like that. It should be available just after midnight. :)

Edit to add: Whoops, Chad beat me to the punch with the link!
