Big 12 Network (from ESPN Regional Television) shutting down

I've never understood calling a syndicated package of basketball and football games a "network."
I have thougth though that if The Longhorn Network didn't exist, the Big 12 could have launched a cable network via ESPN or Fox that would have worked fairly well.

Bevo said no to a Big 12 network, they wanted they own channel full of women's soccer, cupcake football games against kU, and taco making shows
 
Big XII Network dates back to the Big 8 Conference Back in the 80s and 90s that "network" was one of the only ways you could catch college basketball Not having cable in my room as a kid
 
Another move of sports content from OTA to cable. I have to agree that Texas having its own network does limit the ability of the Big 12 to have their own network. So did the loss of Nebraska to the Big 10.
 
You're saying four schools left the conference because of the UT channel? I'm not surprised, but what could the Big 12 do? Texas has an outsize impact on the conference and if they aren't going to play nice and share with the rest of the conference, the teams that could get better deals elsewhere did, a prime example being Nebraska moving to the Big 10 where the conference shares a channel and the revenue it generates. Missouri left as well.

It's just a shame that this syndicated product which was a bone for fans of the other conference teams and could be viewed without a subscription is going away.

the SEC syndicated package is also ending, games are moving the SEC network cable channel, but there is no Big 12 Network cable channel, just the Longhorn Network unavailable in West Virginia
 
the ACC syndicated package will still be available, but most serious college Bball fans have cable if they can afford it, most cord cutters aren't big sports fans, most of the NFL is still available on free TV (for now)

You're completely right without a doubt, but it does make the decision to 'cut the cord' very difficult for a sports fan. At least games can still be heard for free on the radio, for the moment anyway.
