The time has come for separate Buffalo-Rochester Boards

Its the Buffalo NIagara Falls Market and the Rochester Market.....Not the Buffalo- Niagara Falls-Rochester Market...........Therefore with the number of Topics and posts on this current board.....it could be split and the two new boards would still have more topics and posts than many other currently existing boards.......

Your thoughts...........

Why?

There's so much cross-pollenation between Buffalo and Rochester that I enjoy reading the posts regarding our sometimes reluctant neighbors to the east. In this age of uncertainty, knowing what the situation is down the Thruway in either direction often give you some idea of which way the winds of change are blowing.

It has been an unusually busy time on the board with the Wease situation. There are also times when the board is a lot slower, and separate boards would just be a waste of time.

Aw c'mon. My earliest years in Rochester were spent in the far western burbs near Churchville where WBEN-FM pumped in a signal nearly as strong as the locals. My old man took me to the Rockpile to see Johnny Unitas slam the Bills (the locals couldn't even get a first down until the third period) I think around 1971. For a time in the 80's and 90's I had season tickets at Rich. Where I grew up KB competed with WBBF's lame signal, especially at night. WGR, with Stan Roberts, had an impressive influence in Rochester back in the day and the signal is still very strong in the market during daylight hours.

I can recall running into Mayor Griffin at his summer place on Conesus as a young man. There's countless kids I went to school with who ended up studying in Buffalo. My first NBA game involved Ernie D and Big Mac at the Aud and who can forget the French Connection. The most debauched Rock n Roll weekend I ever had was a little trip down the Thruway in which I caught The Dead at the Aud and then saw The Rolling Stones at Rich the next day back in September of 1981.

It's western New York and Rochester is part of Western New York.

Did you ever stop in to Stone's Countryside on route 33 just outside of Churchville? My cousin owns it.

As for separating the boards I think it works out well this way. It keeps things going to have either Buffalo or Rochester to talk about.

Add me to the list of readers who would like to see the status quo continue. I learned so much about the Rochester market in the recent WCMF threads. So, I don't need to separate the two markets.

It is my hope that we keep it the way it is. I was never able to get much info about Rochester and find it illuminating.

And maybe, just maybe part of the gulf between Buffalo & Rochester will shrink a bit.....at least for us few.

I can't think of any good reason to have two boards.
Some of us have worked in both markets & lived in both cities.
I enjoy the Buffalo information here and the opportunity to offer some Buffalo insight from the 50's & 60's.
Let's leave it the way it is.

Hi Ken, I'll cast my vote with those who favor one board for Buffalo and Rochester. If the boards were separated, it's likely most of us would cross-post. Besides, when there's not much going on, it's likely separate boards would look a little like the smaller market boards that seem to go dormant for weeks.

Born in Williamsville and lived briefly in Kenmore, I enjoy reading about the Buffalo market.

In fact years ago I applied for a job at WBEN radio because I wanted to "go back home."

Please keep both boards together and make this old fella happy.

Add my vote to the "keep it together" pile. I grew up in Brighton listening to Rock 102, and to my mind there are few finer meals than a Ted's hot dog and a large loganberry (unless maybe it's some Duff's hot wings.) And I get to work with Bob Smith and hear all his WBEN and KB stories.

Now, Syracuse, that's a whole other kettle of fish... ;)

My vote is to keep as is. This board is a gem, with well written and thought-provoking posts. Both markets have flurries of activity, rarely at the same time. After the Wease issue winds down, I'm sure something equally significant will happen in Buffalo.

Sir Roxalot summarized it well. Thanks to the Wease saga, Rochester-related activity on this board the past few weeks has been somewhat of an aberration — Rochester dialogue otherwise typically seems much more subdued.

With only 60 miles separating the markets, many of us have worked in, have current or former colleagues in, and/or listen to signals from both markets — and the ‘togetherness’ here adds to the board’s vibrancy.

So, just as the Bills consider Rochester part of their market, I strongly favor one board (plus, it kind of makes us Rochesterians feel like ‘big leaguers’ ;) After all, if Miami-Ft. Lauderdale can fit on a single board, so can we.

I agree keep the boards the way they are. I too have lived in Buffalo and now I'm living in Brockport, which while closer to Rochester remains in-between the two cities. I love the inter-city connection in radio the two cities have.

i second.....being that buffalo and rochester are only 70 miles apart, there's considerable overlap between the two markets....ask someone who lives in albion, batavia, or warsaw....western new york is actually served (directly or indirectly) by 6 radio markets...(buffalo, rochester, syracuse, finger lakes, jamestown/bradford pennsylvania, erie pennsylvania, and toronto)....i would also like to see what's up in the syracuse market because their stations reach as far west as palmyra and canandaigua....

So there you go. I'm east of Rochester and get some better radio signal from Syracuse than from Rochester; little from Buffalo. You either have to distinguish between ALL these upstate markets or combine them. I don't think combining is an option. Better separated even if it makes for dullness.

I'm a short-time member of this forum and perhaps I don't evoke properly. My comment referred to the sometimes lack of activity I've observed on the local threads. That's all.

The intent was to offer my opinion that having a combined Buffalo/Niagara Falls/Rochester thread does a disservice to those who live in the eastern reaches of the Rochester market, where, in my opinion, Syracuse takes precedence over Buffalo. I don't know why Buff/Roch was created in the first place, other than maybe a presumed lack of activity on either should they be separate (read: dullness). Simply stated, that's it. Rather than advocate for a Rochester/Syracuse thread I think they should all be separate.

Why someone dug up this 6-year-old thread is beyond me, but I will respond anyway:

SEPARATE the two. You don't piggyback two markets this size just because they're within 70 miles of each other. Would you suggest lumping Columbus, Cincinnati and Cleveland onto one board? Those cities certainly can be linked, but that would be confusing and ridiculous.

Hey, there are plenty of other markets I'm interested in reading about, but I don't advocate lumping them together to save myself mouse clicks.

Buffalo and Rochester are two distinctly different markets; history, etc. I honestly don't have much interest in Rochester at all, just as I don't have much interest in Dayton or Memphis.

The Rochester threads are annoying speed bumps on the board. SEPARATE THEM.
