Bored Of Boards

There doesn't seem to be much interest in this board or the RI board. Friends encouraged me to sign up, but all I've seen are posts that languish without comment for days and sometimes weeks. After researching older posts and threads, it appears that most of those who participated as little as six months ago are no longer active.

It's quite possible many of the former users here are not aware the board is back up.

I guess discussion boards are a little bit like neighborhood taverns. Some are warm and fuzzy, a fun place to be, a welcoming place. Others are just a drab hole-in-the-wall.

Yes, because the board was shut down for a short period of time, people found other "taverns" and coffee shops. Some will be back. New people who NEVER came before will wander in. You and I cannot sit here and pout because the rest of the world does not show up and entertain us. We have to do our part to make the place a "neighborhood".

I live in a little community at the south end of Appalachia where there is a bit of a turf war over: Are we the people of the mountains and boot-legger hot-rods, or are we the people of the affluent Atlanta suburbs who parade around in our Lexus and BMWs hauling legal hootch home. A few months ago I saw a little cardboard sign beside the entrance to a shopping center that I frequent occasionally, and it pointed into the Center and proclaimed "Marie's Italian Deli". I looked at that ragged little sign for a month or so before I got bold and daring and said to my wife: "Let's try it out!!!!"

Marie comes from a family of Italian Deli folks. But she grew up in California. But after about three trips in there I began to realize that this was a little bit of NEW YORK CITY transplanted into "Red Neck Country". Marie was out making the rounds one day, hob-nobbing with the customers (who, even though total strangers) were hob-nobbing with each other. I told her of our oldest child spending the first seven years of her working-years in NYC, and this place reminded me of places she took us in her neighborhood in The City. Marie smiled. When we moved here and I decided it was time to open my own store, my husband and I went to NYC for three weeks and visited as many Italian Delis as we could find time to scout out.

So here we have what looks like they brought home on a semi on a trailer from NYC planted in Appalachia and people come in, order some food, look around, and strike up conversations with strangers.... NYC style.

So: make this forum your project. Make sure you contribute something warm and fuzzy often. Once in awhile contribute a post that has all the warmth and friendliness of a spicy Italian exotic dish that is too hot for the normal taste-buds.

The crowd will come!!! It is not always "the other guys job" to entertain YOU! Go for the ride. It's a lot more fun when you also contribute.

How excited are Buffalonians about having the NCAA playoffs in their town? That should be a big radio topic, given the sports/talk stations.

Or maybe, just maybe, there ain't much to talk about computer run, non-persona, OTA radio is what it is, and there ain't much to discuss left. Just sayin'. JPB ...thumbs up!

Except that most of stations have actual humans in them. Maybe a few shifts are outside. But Buffalo radio is more local than other markets its size. And a lot of that is because Entercom and TownSquare don't believe in centralized national programming like the two biggest companies. It's not like it was 20 years ago, but what is?

This is not only great observation but also a great post! I was a new member of radio discussions before it abruptly shut down. I looked on and off for quite a while for a resurrection, but, not finding one, I gave up. I'm glad this is back! Found it today totally by chance.

I'm not a radio techie, not in or from the business, but I have always had a place in my heart for 'radio' going back to childhood days of playing DJ using a homemade mike and reading the local newspaper into it pretending to be a pro. I enjoy reading this forum even though I don't understand the business or technical aspects of the subject at hand. I will continue reading although I probably will not contribute much due to my lack of knowledge. I just think it's fun.

So thanks for your post Goat Rodeo Cowboy. I will look for opportunities to contribute...

It might not be so boring if there was a discussion of current, or in the case of corporate radio, re-current events. Town Square fired the production director in January, another long term employee, and not one mention.
