John Darin died March 7 in an Olympia hospital just one month after being diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic character. He was 74. Born John Christian Miller in Rapid City, South Dakota, he grew up in Ventura and began in radio as Johnnie Christian at KACY in Oxnard. He then worked as music director at KMEN in San Bernardino. There was a Chuck Christian at KMEN so, to avoid confusion, John took the last name of "Darin" after learning that the station was promoting a James Darren concert. After a stay at KGB in San Diego, Darin moved to KRLA in 1968 as a production assistant and a sidekick to morning man Dave Hull. Soon he had his own program and in 1969 became program director. In 1971 he went to KDAY, then in 1972-73 was program director of new top-40 station KROQ-AM. Later stops included KNAC, KGOE, KNX, KGIL, KJOI and business news KBLA/KMNY. Darin also was a news reporter for KHJ-Channel 9 (now KCAL), KCOP-Channel 13 and KWHY-Channel 22 and hosted programs for Armed Forces Radio.. From 1998 to 2008, Darin was a news anchor on KFWB, then launched an advertising agency and produced infomercials.
