Letterman will retire in 2015

As I understand it, the news was broken by one of his guests on tonight's show. If that's true, I wonder how Dave / CBS feels about the announcement being released by someone other than Dave himself.

Update: It was broken by former R.E.M. member Mike Mills, who will be backing J. Arthur on tonight's show.

If Letterman retires, we will ALL petition CBS to move Craig Ferguson up to 11:35/10:35!! Win win! Who takes over the Late Late Show, that I'm not sure about. Maybe CBS can bring back "The CBS Late Movie" from the 1980s. :D

Do you suppose CBS would bring in a certain tall, gangly red-head who was screwed over by Jay Leno?

Yes, he's one of the names I have heard as a potential replacement.

Count me in on that! I like having Conan on TBS at 11:00. That way, I can watch him interview his guests from 11:30 to midnight and skip the boring first half hours of Fallon and Letterman, then tune in at midnight to see the interview with whoever has the best guest that night.

what happens to the Ed Sullivan theater?

I imagine that's up to CBS. I believe they own it, and Letterman's company leases it.

The more serious question given the landscape is does CBS stay with its 11:30 show in NYC, or move it to LA? We've talked about the booking rules imposed by NBC for Fallon, and it no doubt has affected Letterman's bookings. He gets big stars, but not usually for movie launches.
