The Yankees on WFAN

I was listening to Yankees baseball today on WFAN (which is simulcasting on WKXP/WZAD's "The Wolf" in the Hudson Valley) and it is sounded the same as it is on FM when "The Wolf" carries the Yankees. The sounded the same on 101.9 as it is now on 94.3/97.3.

John Sterling as mentioned on the broadcast that he mentions the "WFAN Yankees Radio Network" instead of "Yankees Radio Network" since WCBS-AM usually carried the Yanks since 2002.

Now that the Yankees got a new home at WFAN, the Mets are at WOR, this is the first day of the regular season.

This is usually how syndication/distribution works. There usually is no difference in the presentation of the broadcast, unless if, say, 1010 WINS was running the games, then you might hear the teletype behind the game.

Interesting how both the Yankees and Mets changed flagship stations at the same time. With regards to the Yankees, WFAN is not received as well in this area as WCBS mainly because WFAN is next to WSM (650-AM) in Nashville. That's particularly true early in the evening. Later on, WFAN can be received here depending on the weather, etc. I wonder if WHAM (1180-AM) in Rochester is still on the Yankees Network? It comes in here fairly well at night.

And it's interesting that you say you can't pull in WFAN-AM as well as you used to get WCBS-AM: Both stations' transmitter is on High Island in The Bronx - which has basically been owned by CBS Radio since the start of this decade.

I think it has to do with where the stations are on the AM dial in relation to other stations in this region. As noted, WFAN at 660-AM is very close to WSM in Nashville at 650-AM and the WSM signal comes in well in this area of Ohio at night. At the same time - and I'm not sure why - WCBS at 880-AM can usually be received here fairly well despite being next to WLS in Chicago at 890-AM. I have picked up WFAN, but just not as well on a consistant basis as WCBS.

Of course to be fair, the Yankees nor CBS care a single iota about people trying to listen 660 miles away (no pun intended ironically). Both are blowtorches locally and that's what counts. As someone that runs back and forth between Philly and NYC all the time, WFAN does better this direction a bit, in fact it pretty much feels like a local station most of the time, which as a Yankee fan I appreciate more now.

The cause must be local interference since both WFAN and WCBS transmit from the same tower and with the same power. Of course, WSM is to your southwest and WFAN is to your northeast. That would make it difficult to null out WSM. WLS is to your northwest and WCBS is to your northeast. You can easily null out the WLS signal.
