WAY-FM Louisville Changes

WAY-FM is moving from 93.9 to 104.3 and 105.9. They are advertising the change on billboards and their Facebook page. What do you predict is coming to 93.9? I would have said 680 ESPN, but they added 105.7. My hope is FM talk to fill the hole that 105.1 FM Talk left. I bet the change will happen on 3/1.

I'd like to see Louie come back! 93.9 is a lot better signal than 104.3. However, Cumulus owns 93.9, so we might see a Cumulus station pop up.... I hope it's NOT a NASH-FM station!

Cumulus usually isn't interested in standalones. If anything, you'll more likely either see another Way FM production that compliments 104.3/105.9 or a new LMA partner/owner. BIA showed Louisville as having 48 stations. So, Summit Media could add it as could most other operators not named Clear Channel or Mainline/L&L. I suppose Cumulus could be expanding, but that doesn't seem likely given that it's already passed on several clusters in the market.

105.1 was a loser in the ratings. Bringing FM talk back is worthless. Terre Haute, IN is about to drop Rush & company from FM in favor of AC. The only FM talkers that work have a strong (and expensive) local news heritage.

WAY FM already tried a compliment format on 105.9 when it changed it to Shine 105.9 but that didn't last very long.I read on their Facebook page last night that they will not be involved in the future programming of 93.9. It's interesting that WAY FM started on 104.3 then bought 105.9 and simulcasted on both signals. They are now back to where they started.

They are now back to where they started.

Wonder what the total is for the amount of money they've flushed down the toilet here? Buying 104.3. Buying 105.9 from Salem. Not being happy with 105.9's coverage of the market, they moved it to the tower that B96 and WSFR is on...but had to go directional. Not being happy with that they then LMA 93.9. Now, like you said, they are back to where they started.

I had forgotten Cumulus still owned that orphan signal. I wonder why in the world they haven't dealt it off to someone else by now?

As of today (3/15) 93.9 is still WAY FM. I thought that there would be a change by now. Has anyone heard any news about 93.9?

I haven't heard anything, but have 93.9 on a preset and punch in every once in a while to see if things have changed...

It is strange that WAY-FM has taken everything off of their website that has anything to do with 93.9 and nothing new has been be put in it's place.

Like I said a couple weeks ago, it belongs to Cumulus so someone might be negotiating an LMA or a purchase, but is taking longer than expected. Cumulus is probably is asking too much for it.

Or Cumulus has no plan, and they're just letting WAY-FM stay there for free for the time being to keep some programming on the air.

93.9 Format

WAY-FM is no longer on the air on 93.9. Maybe expect an April Fool's format stunt?

Today they started running a tape loop saying that WAY FM Louisville is no longer on 93.9 FM. They say that WAY FM has moved to 105.9 and 104.3 and to change your preset now.
Wonder when something new will be on 93.9?

Whatever it is, I just hope it isn't a simulcast of another local station (although that seems like a likely possibility). Local radio is always getting worse and worse on variety, and the simulcasts just depress me.

Way-FM

The owners of Louie 104.3 declined to purchase 104.3 from WAY-FM. My guess is WAY-FM would have used that cash to buy 93.9 outright, but couldn't since 104.3 didn't sell.

I don't think New Albany Broadcasting would have allowed Louie to go off the air if the plan was to move to 93.9. The switch should have happened fairly quickly if that were the case, with at worst a week's downtime if WAY weren't willing to do a quick change.

The Louie option sounds great, although I agree that New Albany Broadcasting is probably not going to return to that since they'd built the momentum for it for two years and it is all gone now... it's too late to get it restarted. But what would be nice is to see New Albany Broadcasting jump in there and revive WLRS in some form. There seemed to be some speculation that something could be up their sleeve about a year ago when they took WLRS for 1600 AM (after Mainline discarded WLRS), a move similar to when they'd taken the WLUE letters earlier. I would love to see some variation of WLRS return to Louisville (well, any variation besides the awful FM talk radio one). The "Everything that Rocks" one was actually one of my favorites, but it was doomed from the beginning as RadioOne/Mainline had already given up on the channel before then by eliminating as much on-air talent as possible and never really bothering with promotions. To be fair, pretty much every previous version of WLRS in recent history went away because they weren't getting great ratings, but I honestly believe that if somebody could do it right, with the right on-air staff and something to differentiate itself from the other rock stations in the area, it could work.

I read on RadioInsight today that a new translator in Shelbyville at 100.1 (W261CO) was granted to W&B Broadcasting (owners of WAKY 103.5) and it will translate 93.9 WAYI. The problem is that WAY-FM is not on 93.9 any longer.I wonder if this means that whatever ends up on 93.9 will be translated on 100.1. Could W&B possibly be leasing or buying 93.9?

Indeed, just reviewed the construction permit and it reads:
Name of Permittee: W&B BROADCASTING, INC
Principal community to be served: KY-SHELBYVILLE
Primary Station: WAYI (FM), Channel 230, SELLERSBURG, IN
Via: Direct - off-air
Frequency (MHz): 100.1
Channel: 261
Hours of Operation: Unlimited

Other interesting points tho is the transmitter location at 38° 06' 28.00", -85° 42' 46.00" which puts it atop South Park Hill (I-65 & Gene Snyder), in the Fairdale, KY., area. Well within the City of Louisville limits, in the south-western portion. The 60 dBu Service Contour can be see here: http://goo.gl/tnmzmg

100.1

93.9 really doesn't need a translator in Jefferson County-if the translator were actually near Shelbyville I could see it, but this really wouldn't help. Could the parent station be switched to WAKY?

OK, I'm not at all knowledgeable in these matters, but how can that be the service area for a translator licensed to Shelbyville?

Ironically, what is shown here would have been a great complement to Louie 104.3.
