Stations who's call letters contain reference to channel number

In Roman numeral form

WPVI channel 6 Philadelphia
KNXV channel 15 Phoenix

or even

KAET channel 8 (aet) in Phoenix

so let the fun begin. :)

Some Roman numerals, some not:

KTEN channel 10 Sherman, TX/Ada, OK
KXII channel 12 Sherman, TX/Ada, OK
WXII channel 12 Winston-Salem, NC
WTEN channel 10 Albany, NY
KVII channel 7 Amarillo, TX
WVII channel 7 Bangor, ME
KIII channel 3 Corpus Christi, TX
KVIE channel 6 Sacramento, CA
WPXI channel 11 Pittsburgh, PA
KTWO channel 2 Casper, WY
WTWO channel 2 Terre Haute, IN
KFOR channel 4 Oklahoma City, OK
WFOR channel 4 Miami, FL
WSVN channel 7 Miami, FL

KIXE 9 Redding-Chico, California
WXXI 21 Rochester
WLVI 56 Boston

KAET channel 8 (aet) in Phoenix

Not to toss cold water on your speculation but I think the calls for KAET in Phoenix (actually Arizona State University in Tempe) was not for the Channel 8 relationship but because it is our PBS affiliate it meant "Arizona Educational Television".

WDIO-TV, channel 10, Duluth, MN. The "IO" in their logo always appears in a different color (or outline form or solid black or white) to appear as "10."

(Though in fact they used to run "The Lone Ranger," it has nothing to do with I O Silver, awaaaay!)

WCCT, channel 20, in Waterbury, CT, used to be WTXX. The call is now on WTXX-LP in Springfield, MA, but it's on channel 34.

Channel 9 in Syracuse, NY, was WIXT from 1978 to 2005.

WLVI 56 Boston

Then on the radio side, there's KLVI (560) in Beaumont TX.

I always thought that the use of Roman numerals by TV stations was a little odd. Not to the point of it being a big deal in my mind. But here we have 21st century media outlets using the latest technologies, yet identifying themselves (or at least their channel numbers) with numerical designations more than two millenia old.

I read on Wikipedia that Q102 in Philadelphia got their call letters WIOQ because an uppercase cursive Q looks like the number 2, so "IOQ" written in cursive would look like 102.

KTIV 4 Sioux City, IA
KIVV 5 Lead, SD (considering this station is a satellite of KEVN, broadcasting on channel sEVeN, the IV probably probably represents the word fIVe and the second V the roman numeral for five)
KPVI 6 Pocatello, ID
KSVI 6 Billings, MT
KRII 11 Chisholm, MN

KFVE K-5 Channel 5 in Honolulu HI Before the powers that be of those stations a couple of years ago swapped channels with KGMB Channel 9 (CBS) with K-5 but the names and the network affilation remain, the same KGMB is now on 5 and KFVE is on 9

I believe WIOF (104.1) -- now WMRQ -- in Waterbury/Hartford saw a similarity between a capital F and a 4.

I didn't say they selected AET just to sound like Eight or if that even entered into the selection, I just said AET sounds like eight. I know they selected for Arizona Educational Television and that AET was just a coincidence, a fun coincidence. As for them choosing to be on channel 8 that I don't know. I do know if AET got 3 or 5 or 10 etc the call letters wouldn't have fit as well as they do on 8.

WXII Channel 12 Winston-Salem NC was mentioned, but not two other stations in the same market.

WXLV is Channel 45. WLXI was Channel 61 in the analog days but now uses Channel 43, which is its actual channel. There's really no reason for that and I'm not sure it's technically allowed. But stations were free to keep using their old channel number after the digital transition so people wouldn't have to figure out where the channel was.
