Will CBS Let Lara Logan Come Back? Should they?

CBS News is a mess. Murrow and Cronkite must be spinning in their graves. New York Magazine's current story on Lara Logan paints a picture of a workplace turned into a war zone, with an incompetent management out of control and workers at each others' throats. Maybe it's a good thing hardly anybody's watching.

Benghazi and the Bombshell
Is Lara Logan too toxic to return to 60 Minutes?

Lara Logan’s Return to CBS Is Still Very Uncertain

The fallout from a deeply flawed 60 Minutes report on Benghazi last October continues to play out at CBS News, according to a lengthy account of the proceedings by Joe Hagan in New York. It traces the report back to a combination of issues, including Logan’s tenacity (or recklessness, depending on your perspective), her close relationship to the military sector, CBS’s unwillingness to reign in its star reporter, and a lack of fail-safes.

"Here, then, was a convergence, the proverbial perfect storm: [CBS News chairman Jeff] Fager had given Logan outsize power; [executive editor Bill] Owens, Fager’s acolyte, didn’t ask the boss’s star the tough questions; and [producer Max] McClellan, a true-blue Logan loyalist, didn’t have the desire or the authority to bring Logan to heel. On top of that, the senior vice-president of standards and practices, Linda Mason, whose job it was to bring outside scrutiny to any segment, had departed in early 2013, and Fager never replaced her. Logan was free to operate as she chose." ...

Here's Your Crucial Reminder That Lara Logan Has Breasts

Joe Hagan's new New York profile of 60 Minutes reporter Lara Logan is literally called "Benghazi and the Bombshell." In it, Hagan attempts to determine whether Logan is "too toxic" to return to the show after her faulty Benghazi report, but most of the time, it seems like he's trying to figure out whether she's too hot.

CBS executives have said that Logan will eventually return from her leave of absence, despite the fact that some of her colleagues want her fired. Hagan notes:

"A common view among current and former colleagues (keeping in mind that not-for-attribution backbiting and Schadenfreude are a stock-in-trade of TV news) is that Logan’s star power blinded her superiors to her flaws. "She got everything she wanted, always, even when she was wrong, and that’s been going on since the beginning," says a former CBS News producer who worked with her." ...

In case you were wondering, Logan has posed in "swimwear" for the British tabloids, one of which refers to her as "34D Logan."

Logan was NEVER a quality reporter. Were it not for the incident in Egypt she never would've risen to a spot on 60 Minutes. They seem to have already cloned her in the person of Holly Williams who seems to get sent to the prime assignments instead of a higher quality reporter like say, Clarissa Ward.

I don't think they'll let her back because, frankly, they have no need to. I also don't think they should. Toxic strikes me as an appropriate descriptor for her.

I'm not sure the depiction that 'hardle anyone's watching' is accurate though. 60 Minutes remains a top rates program, 'CBS This Morning' has had consistently higher ratings and the evening newscast is holding its own. The On Air product has greatly improved of late. Hopefully they keep Logan off of the air.

But....but.....but Lara is SO easy to look at (he said whilst twitching his Snivley Whiplash mustache).

In response to a couple of statements above.

First, regarding "almost nobody's watching" CBS. 60 Minutes is not the number 1 powerhouse it used to be, but it usually leads in its timeslot, rates decently among the key demographic (18-49), and is usually in the Top 10 for the week. If you're talking about CBS news in general, the picture isn't too bad there either. Ratings for the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley are up compared to years past, and certainly since Katie Couric. CBS has been coming in second on Sunday morning; Face the Nation now beats Meet the Press on NBC, though it trails This Week on ABC.

Second, whether or not Lara Logan is "hot." Though she is attractive, I've personally never found her particularly hot. Certainly not "too hot" to be a CBS correspondent. Besides, they need somebody to counteract Morley Safer. His jowls have become frightening!

Lara Logan and Sharyl Attkisson will both be on the Fox News payroll by January 2015. They will be part of the nightly Benghazi Report.

Sharyl has already said she doesn't plan to do broadcast work in the near term and Fox has no need to hire someone with Logan's baggage.

I could see Sharyl getting picked up at some point but not Logan.

Logan is the latest in a long line of embarrassments for CBS News. They have a knack for promoting the wrong people (Couric) and running off good people (Adkisson.). Les Moonves is the one who should be fired. He has his hands all over this mess......yet he'll get a record paycheck this year while his wife continues to be a glittering example of nepotism on display on "The Talk."

Scott Pelley and Bob Schiefer have to wonder how they manage to survive in a sea of idiots.

Les Moonves is getting a record paycheck because CBS has consistenly been number one in prime-time for years now.
