Question about Michael Graham

Michael Graham is coming to Atlanta on WYAY-FM (All News 106.7) as a new talk show host starting Monday, May 12 at 9 a.m. I don't know much about him beyond his bio. What was his reputation in New England? I'm a media reporter and want to interview him but he is refusing to meet me in person or talk to me by phone. He is insisting on an email interview only (which as we all know isn't the best way to interview anybody because you can't let a conversation flow.) Considering he has never been heard in Atlanta and could use publicity, I find this sort of strange. Then again, maybe he's been burned before and is paranoid and wants to control his answers in a way that ensures I don't misquote him.

Hopefully you'll get to interview him--I may plant a seed on his facebook page (still there though last post Apr 18?) His site has a link to this bit: http://radiotvtalk.blog.ajc.com/2014/05/07/radiotv-briefs-jennifer-perry/

Wasn't the biggest fan of Michael's voice (but hey that's just me...) tho I will say a classmate of mine, Gary Leavitt, did some impressions on his show.
When WTKK went down he at least worked to get back on the air. Still writing for Boston Herald...

considering his history with the Boston Globe he is not a friend of newspapers he is not writing for.

He did write op-ed pieces for the Boston Herald, but the uber Liberal Boston Globe was at war with him.

I assume Atlanta is a PPM market, his ratings will speak for him

As a media performer, I'm sure he wants to be responsible (and in control) of his introduction to the Atlanta population.

Why would he let someone else be in control of his "intro" to the Atlanta market?

(Especially before he says his first word on the air?)

"performer" is about right. Graham has no integrity. He claims to be "free market" but blames a "liberal conspiracy" for his removal from WTKK. Never mind the station wasn't doing well and was eventually flipping formats. Nothing to do with politics except in the minds of Graham and his tens of followers/fans.

Graham as in Crackers... That's all you need to know about him..... ;-)

I think you're mixing him up with Severin (who the Globe was "at War" with). TG probably viewed Graham was a pipsqueek.

Graham seemed like a hard working decent guy. I say that recognizing that conservative talk is supposed to be crazy so MG just did his job though he likely believes what he's saying.
Conservatives claim to have difficult times with employers in Boston and I see no evidence of that. As for callers: mostly elderly and most are agreeable.

His reluctance to do interviews may come from his personal situation which I don't know much about. He had a separation and some traffic incident but I look at his tenure in the market as pretty uneventful as bomb throwing conservatives go.

You have your opinion, I have mine.

There was a time when 96.9 WTKK had a terrific line-up: Jim and Margery in AM drive, Graham from 10 AM till 2 PM, Severin 2 - 6 PM, Michele McPhee 6 - 10 PM.

It's too bad "external" forces broke this up.

Did I forget anybody? Oooh, yeah: Imus and Smerconish; these two never should've been on 'TKK.

The "external" forces are called ratings.

As the page on Wikipedia notes, he was working at 630-WMAL, 9 to noon, if I remember correctly. I'd listen to him occasionally. Rather open about his feelings in regards to members of the Islamic faith.

I remember the morning after the 2004 general election and George Bush had won re-election, Graham's topic of discussion was going to be "Why do we need Democrats?"

I wanted to call in and mention that he needed Democrats to have something to talk about, but alas, didn't get a chance.

Believe Graham Cracker is a graduate of Bob Jones University. Need I say more....!

WTKK also had Barnicle who lifted jokes from a Carlin book, claimed he'd never read it then someone found a clip of him on Chronicle saying there was a yuck on every page.

Must admit I do miss dissing on Michael Graham. It was fun and so easy to goof on that squirrel eating back-woods moron. I think Karl from NH was his #1 fan. There you go!

Economics

Michael himself had this to say in one of his farewell posts on his website:

What doesn’t exist is a company willing to ignore the political pressure, step up and meet that demand. WTKK wasn’t killed by the marketplace. Conservative political talk was smothered to death by political and social pressure to silence the one meaningful voice of dissent on the airwaves.

he can say what he wants, Greater Media is on a path to get younger listeners because that is where the buyers want to place ad dollars.

IIRC the 96.9 Talk ratings were not fantastic, they had a huge payroll, the ratings and billings were not what a major market FM should be posting

They couldn't get Howie, Jay Severino was a problem in their eyes and on their payroll, McScreech was shown the door and they never filled her spot with local talent, it was just a sinking ship imho.

96.9 is posting mid 3's in the 6 plus PPM's, that is better than the previous format

Not true

smothered to death "

It's absolutely not true. And I'm certain everybody on this board knows this.

If people like Graham, DiPietro, Severin, et al. didn't lie (among other things) then they would have gone as far as their talent would take them. They weren't run out of town.

BAck to the original question. Maybe Graham stopped giving interviews after his marriage broke up and the traffic/insurance problem?

Believe Graham Cracker is a graduate of Bob Jones University. Need I say more....!

If so, I would be surprised, as an Irish Catholic wouldn't be all that comfortable there.

But then again, feel free to spew things regardless of if they are true or not...because no one can hold you accountable when your anonymous!
