KANY move in

Well, since 93.7 is a Class C0 running 33 kw from 3,100 ft on South Mountain, 46 miles west of Seattle, and 107.3 is a Class A running 4.1 kw from south of Aberdeen, it is not a surprise that someone near Seattle accidentally finding Bigfoot on 93.7 would have a problem hearing it on 107.3. On the other hand, we never promoted the Bigfoot format in the Seattle-Tacoma market, there was never any reference to the market outside Grays Harbor on the station. We did promote to the Grays Harbor listeners the move to 107.3. The Bigfoot format was always intended for Grays Harbor. It was merely an accident of timing that it continued on 93.7 after the move to South Mountain.

I'm frankly surprised that someone near Seattle would enjoy listening to our Grays Harbor-oriented news, weather, commercials.

Bill - Do you have any intention in the future to bump up KLSY (future KANY) in ERP? If I recall, 93.7 an ERP around 14kw when it was on Cosmopolis Hill. I'm assuming that the 107.3 signal isn't covering Grays Harbour county like the original KANY signal.

Bill count me in - I used to enjoy Rhys Davis whenever KSWW would come in during tropo events - in Marysville at 100 mi they were still common over K271AH and KPQ.

Its 7:20 on 11 May 2014, and 93.7 is still running their bird/ocean noises with 107.3 promos. I thought I would just add that as an update as it seems 93.7 has not been consistent with their tracking.

Here is something that I am curious about: What is the realistic coverage for that 93.7 signal? Considering that I have not had the opportunity to drive around the coastal region with 93.7 on the radio since they moved to South Mountain, I am wondering what the coverage is like. Can they easily be heard all of the way down into pacific country (Long Beach) and up north along the coastline?

Radio Locator seems to indicate that it MAY be possible to pick up 93.7 as far North and West as Forks, but I doubt the validity of the provided map.

Also, you guys should really take a look at the KANY Facebook page before they change it to adopt "107.3". They have a strange cover picture posted of various registered web domains, and a logo for 107.3. VERY odd...

For the Kitsap County area, all the South Mountain signals come in very well here in Bremerton, with the exception of the downtown area because of a hill (in the Charleston neighborhood where i'm at, results may vary). Up in Silverdale and down in Port Orchard, they come in very well.

107.3 here though, is either the CSN translator, or CHBE-FM from Victoria.

I ve a hard time picking up the new KANY signal from east of Raymond, but like you I haven't been down 101 in a while. KDDS and KOMO-FM do well from that location, I've even picked up KDDS as far south as Long Beach before. I wonder why KANY is so weak in and around Raymond?

I'm assuming that is has something to do with the power output. KOMO FM runs 69kw while KANY only runs 33kw. I'm no engineer, but I believe that when you have a scenario such as that (where two stations transmit from virtually the same height) the weaker signal is more affected by interference despite having similar coverage. Perhaps an expert can give us a real answer though ;)

Thanks for the info! Here in the Gig Harbour area, KANY is solid. I think radio locator greatly overestimated the coverage in the northern areas of the state. They indicate hood canal being just barely outside the 60dbu local coverage map; however, I have always picked up CJJR on my car radio with ease once I hit the Hood Canal Bridge so I am wondering if KANY really has enough power to knock a 75kw 700+ metre signal off of its original coverage.

As for the west side of the Olympic Mountains, I don't believe that the signal can be heard anywhere once you get too far to the north (i.e, Forks) as the mountains would completely shield the signal.

I could hear most of the Vancouver stations at Quilcene and Port Hadlock, WA back in June of 2013 - KOMO, KXXO completely blocked by CBUF/CHKG.
South was a different story - at Eldon/Lilliwaup, the Vancouver stations were blocked and never ever popped up - not even aircraft scatter. 101.1 was KXL. 96.1 was KXXO. 103.5 was IBOC. 95.3 was KXXK or KXLE depending on condx. Victoria channels were very weak - 92.1 was very weak.

KOMO-FM and KDDS are both a class C. 93-7 (KANY for now) is a class C0 and cannot have the same power and coverage as a class C. However, one would think that there may be a power upgrade in the future while still staying within the parameters of a class C0.

Do you guys think that Bill would be willing to clue any of us in to when the big flip is going to happen? I'm sure some of us would like to be able to hear the first few minutes of airtime.

Get the sign on so we can post it on Format Change Archive......

Another regional Mexican (religious?) station? Really? (I don't speak Spanish, but it sounds like a religious station.) The market needs another one of these just like we need another CHR. I was hoping for something unique with a mass appeal. The audio sounds (spoken word) like its coming through two tin cans separated by string.

No. It's a C0 and that's the power of a C0 at that height. If it were a C, then the power would double. And it can't be a C as long as KUBE is on Cougar Mountain. Move KUBE to West Tiger, then they both can be a full C.

By definition, something unique will not have mass appeal. And to my knowledge, there is not another Christian Hispanic FM station in the market. So in that sense, it is unique.

What do birds have to do with an SS REL. station? And why is it needed when there is AM 1680 all over Seattle?

Unique, yes it is. But I was hoping for a format that would make me want to listen to the radio again...guess not.

93.7 I guess is kinda like the Hispanic version of Spirit 105.3 KCMS.

Could have made more money with an upscale format like Triple A or Smooth Jazz. Not the brightest move. It's amazing people that own signals and yet have so little vision.

Well I just heard the official news. I have to say, this is a major disappointment. The Seattle AM dial already contains a plethora of Spanish language programming for anyone who is interested. Not to mention, KDDS 99.3 serves as as a power house Spanish leader.

I'm curious to hear from other Radio Discussions members on this topic. I don't have confidence in this format.
