Useful talk radio?

I'm looking for recommendations on Monday thru Friday advice talk shows besides Clark & Dave? Since Dr. Laura and Bruce Williams are out of the picture there seems to be a void of "useful" talk shows. Is there a 21st century Bruce Williams out there?

I'll hazard a guess here. It's purely, totally a guess.

To do a political based news/talk show, all it takes is some training, a little talent, and some experience. To to a good, effective advice or information talk show, you need those things, plus you need some bona-fide expertise on the subject itself. So, I asked myself, if I had bona-fide expertise on financial matter, like Bruce Williams, what career path would have the best combination of rewarding working conditions and high compensation. And when considering all the different ways I could put that expertise to use, tying myself down to doing a regular radio show was near the bottom of the list. My guess is that most folks with the expertise to do an effective advice show are using that advice in a different arena.

I think that's a fair way to put it. I know I'd do a Bruce Williams type show if I could.

You'd think as popular as Clark and Dave are that there would be imitators, but there aren't.

Do you know why that is? It's because to imitate those guys, you need to KNOW your stuff, not just repeat ideological talking points. It's true, if you think about it.

How amazing that the finance/advice guys are more original than many of the nations more prominent talk show hosts.

Pitiful.

Well, didn't take long for this to turn into yet another "conservative radio sucks" thread.

Can we have ONE thread that isn't the same old crap?

There aren't more advice shows, particularly business ones, because the people who do that sort of thing aren't interested in radio anymore. People don't generally have a varied gamut of experience like Bruce Williams did. It has nothing to do with "ideological talking points" and EVERYTHING to do with lack of experience.

Sorry, hard to ignore the MASSIVE elephant in the room in the format.

I know I miss Bruce, but with Clark out there, why seek out another? Is there something he's not providing that you're seeking?

There never really have been a lot of shows like this, at least on the national level. There may be a local show or two that fits this profile, Cindy Graves on WBOB in Jacksonville somewhat fits this profile, but her advice would center on aspects mostly related to Florida, specifically Jacksonville issues. By this I mean she doles out advice based on local laws and might not be as useful to someone not living there.

Especially when you're obsessed with elephants.

Even if you aren't obsessed with elephants, when you're surrounded by them, they're hard to ignore. I mean, they're ELEPHANTS. You can ignore a mouse in the corner. You can ignore a spider in the ceiling. You can't ignore an ELEPHANT. They're huge, and they smell. They also poop a lot.

And another thing. This seems as good a place to post it as any place else. I've noticed that this subject area tends to (1) inspire heated (and interesting) discussions, and (2) it gets a lot of people kvetching that the discussions are too heated (and interesting). But the one thing I've noticed in all internet discussion forums is that when there is a post that's whining that things are too heated, it is usually a throw-in post coming from someone who seldom posts anything else, or if they do post anything else, it's mostly reactions, seldom anything new.

If anyone (and I mention no one specifically) doesn't want so much heated (and interesting) discussions, instead of whining and kvetching about posts they don't like, maybe they should try posting something interesting themselves that isn't controversial.

Obviously Dave Ramsey does a form of "Bruce Williams" show, in that he does deal with finance. But there's also some politics and preaching involved.

The thing that made Bruce great was that he gave more than financial advice. He'd talk about running for local office, or give advice on how to handle troublesome neighbors. He really was something unique. But expecting that in this day and age, where people aren't Renaissance Men is a bit much. Most people specialize in one thing, radio hosts aren't exempt from that.

The problem is that constantly complaining about Rush is neither interesting nor does it ever change. It's the same crap every single time. It's a waste of bandwidth and time.

Bruce Williams was also a gentleman. Back in 1983, Bruce did a live show from KOB-AM, Albuquerque. At that time, the KOB studio facilities were not good. We had no way of getting high fidelity audio from the Albuquerque studios to New York. Bruce worked around the problem by having NBC ship a Comrex Extender to the station. Using two dial-up lines, we were able to get a 5kHz response from Albuquerque to New York.
Bruce opened his show with ... "From the very comfortable studios of KOB in Albuquerque." The studios were not comfortable at all. They were old and nasty. Bruce Williams was a gentleman.

Thank you folks for your input. I'm leaning towards replacing Laura Ingraham with Clark Howard as I am going up against a powerhouse talker that has all the top tier NeoConservative hosts. I already added Ramsey so Clark may be a nice lead-in. My only issue with Clark is his puberty voice. I recall Suzy Orman had a radio show but perhaps that was TV only.

I remember being a young guy (21 or 22 I think) and having some harebrained scheme for going into business for myself. I called Bruce and he talked me out of it. The guy really was the best.

Also, if you're not dead set on advice shows and you have room for it, Dennis Miller does a pretty good show. It fits the demo while still being a bit more light hearted than most political talk. Plus he does lots of show biz interviews and such as well. When he first started on radio it was a tough listen, but he's really come into his own.
