Latino 96.3 is now Mega

Latino 96.3 switched to Mega 96.3 started their new programming and repeated several Shakira songs at 2:00pm time and later Shakira was on-air to introduce the new format of the station. Looks like Mega 96.3 wants to focus with the Spanish CHR format and to aim on Univision's K-LOVE ratings.

It was almost three decades ago that KRLA historian Bill Earl published two books, Dream House, a history of KRLA, and When Radio Was Boss, a scrapbook of the legendary 1950s-60s-70s top-40 stations. One of Bill's many complaints about contemporary radio is that stations use cutesy lil' names instead of call letters. I agree with him...and the trend has never abated. Now apparently all the "good" names are taken so we have a station that decided to resurrect the old name used by 100.3/92.3 KCMG. Brilliant.

Actually, SBS just brought in the name and logo of its decades-old Mega from New York City...

And, except of the US and Canada and Australia, most of the world has never relied on call letters as primary identifiers for most stations. Names, more easily remembered and more associated with the brand, are used almost exclusively worldwide.

I have often wondered why US stations were so attached to the anachronism of call letters... a product of the 20's that is utterly confusing now that even medium sized markets have 20 or more stations.

I've worked at stations where not a single person on the staff new the call letters.

Actually, Mega is CHR and KLVE is AC. Two different, albeit overlapping, formats.

Crazy

I think the clock is ticking for super estrella too! Their ratings are low. First 93.9 changed. Now 96.3. Super estrella next?
