Hi all,

To all us old timers...is this the same Barry Beck who was here at KUBE Seattle, back in the day? I listened to a sound bite / air check and it sounded like him. He, along with his co-host were fired for making a remark about the city of Rochester paying for trans-gender operations. Google the story if you want for more details. (I personally don't think tax payers should be paying for this...shouldn't there be a fund that people of like mindset can donate for others to get the physical reassignment done?)

Was this sort of like a talk show that he was on? I'm afraid i've never heard of Barry Beck, but if he was on a talk radio show in Rochester, NY, I don't see how they can fault him for his statement. Talk radio is opinionated.
 
The controversy in Rochester had nothing to do with their opinions of the insurance coverage issue and everything to do with the fact they attacked a caller and a local high school student in the course of the discussion.

As I pointed out on the Rochester board:

I looked into it, and here's what I found in the Rochester City Paper account of the new health plan:

"To receive the benefits, employees will have to purchase an enhanced coverage plan."

So it's an extra charge, not part of basic coverage. And the employee is paying for the enhanced coverage, not taxpayers.

There are lines you just DON'T cross these days folks. This is 2014, not 1984. Especially on a public medium where everything you say can and will be used against you. It's not cool (or right) to mock the LGBT community any more than mocking someone who is of a different color, ethnicity or religion. Or with a disability. And there never was a time when it actually was. There are other things to talk about.

Secondly, as TheBigA pointed out, they were misinformed and they relayed that misinformation without getting the hard details. But I think what clinched it was they made these remarks about the transgendered and while they tried to back peddle a few times on the tape, playing samples of "Dude Looks Like A Lady" kinda defeated that.

And for the record, "Dude Looks Like A Lady", according to Steven Tyler was inspired by meeting Vince Neil of Motley Crue for the first time and seeing Vince from behind, he thought he looked like a woman and came up to talk to him and the song was inspired by his reaction on seeing Neil's face for the first time.
