Thom Hartmann to Replace Ed Schultz

Hartmann some years ago moved his syndicated show to 3 to 6pm Eastern, so as not to run at the same time as Schultz's Noon to 3pm show. Now that Schultz is no longer airing, Hartmann is moving back to Noon to 3pm and says he has a plan for 3 to 6pm. During the coming week, he's actually doing both shifts, Noon to 6pm, so I guess his stations still have a live feed for now if they air the show at 3 o'clock Eastern.

I'm not sure what Hartmann's plan is for 3-6pm. Maybe he's found a new host? Leslie Marshall sometimes subs for him so maybe he'll help her move to 3 to 6pm since she doesn't have many affiliates and overlaps with Alan Colmes in the evening. If you're a Progressive Talk station, you have these options...

Bill Press 6 to 9am Eastern
Stephanie Miller 9am to Noon*
Thom Hartmann Noon to 3pm*
??? 3 to 6pm
Alan Colmes 6 to 9pm
Leslie Marshall 7 to 10pm
Mike Malloy 12 to 3am*

The number of Progressive Talk stations is dwindling but those stations still have these options. And they can also air non-Conservative syndicated shows such as Dr. Joy Browne (psychology) and Clark Howard (family finances) that are likely of interest to their listeners.

He seems like a more level headed type than old Ed. I'm sure most of Ed's remaining stations will pick him up. I guess it's a good move up for Hartmann.
 
Hartmann's show has always been fed at noon Eastern. There has been a repeat feed at 3pm. When Big Ed started doing his show at noon, too, some stations decided to take Ed's show live and delay Hartmann to 3pm. When you hear a syndicated talk show is not necessarily when it's produced. Most national talk shows have two or more complete feeds.

Or, with today's technology, the station takes the feed live, records it and automatically plays it back at a different time.

Some shows feed the first hour or two at the end of the "live show" for time zone balancing.

I think he's also more intellectual than Ed. Which to me means some of Ed's listeners may have a tougher time relating to him than Ed's approach to broadcasting. To me, at least, Ed's the guy you strike up a conversation with in the corner coffee shop or local bar. Hartmann more the dude in the tweed coat that you run into on a college campus.

I'll have to take your word for that, but I've never heard of him threatening violence on NRA members or posting anti-Semitic messages on Twitter. So he's got that going for him.

No I think you're mistaken. Hartmann has been promoting on his show that he's "moving back" to Noon-3pm, from his 3-6pm time. And he often gets calls that he identifies, that come from people listening to WBAI New York. WBAI only carries his show from 5-6pm. I doubt listeners hearing a tape delay would know to call at 2pm instead of 5pm, especially since that's never announced on the air. Maybe a third of his calls come from WBAI in that hour.

I assume back when he started the program, and it was airing live from Noon-3pm live, some stations delayed it till 3pm so they could air Ed Shultz live. SiriusXM, delays it even further. But I think it's clear that he's moving back to doing it live at Noon, as he keeps reminding listeners. Alan Colmes had been doing his show live from 10pm-1am but he too moved to 6-9pm last year.

Yes, Big Ed does come off like a character out of Fargo - which he is. A dumb guy in a diner. An ex-jock, which he also is. Apparently, some consultant noted the level of stupidity in right-wing talk radio and decided stupidity was a requirement for all talk radio. And grabbed a small market guy like Ed.

That guy next door, working class, labor oriented, outside-the-Beltway attitude that Ed used to project when I was listening to him a few years ago was something I thought was a positive thing.

I agree with Colmes probably 7 percent of the time.
I used to listen to Clark Howard on KLBJ AM in Austin. I am working when he comes on.

And yes Hartmann is night and day difference then Schultz.
Miller was on now defunct Current TV.
Never heard of Dr. Joy Browne.
 
Mike Malloy is a firebrand, but he often makes some very good points and covers news articles (especially relating to labor and international trade) that get bypassed by most other broadcast media.
