Fox News Viewers Pre-Death Demo

Maybe dementia explains the appeal of right-wing talk. It's long been discussed here and elsewhere that the audience for right-wing talk radio is well past retirement age but apparently that applies to right-wing talk on cable TV, as well. Half of Bill O'Reilly's viewers are over 72 years old. Viewership in the money demos is lower than ever.

Fox News's Old Viewership Is Getting Even Older

Fox News's ratings among 25- to 54-year-olds is the lowest it's been in 12 years, even as the cable channel remains the highest-watched of all its competitors. ...

Does advertising revenue reflect this? Is MSNBC, which I assume skews much younger, making more money than its audience numbers would justify in comparison to top-rated Fox? Or are there advertisers out there in Corporate America that will overpay for Fox because it's more likely to report news that reflects positively on them?

That's an interesting statistic, especially when you consider how many of the dead consistently vote Democrat.

MSNBC and CNN audiences aren't much younger

Fox News has the highest subscriber fee, but what about ad fees?

That's what I was wondering about. Fox News continues to produce programming that attracts the fathers and grandfathers of people in the saleable demos. Again, are advertisers willing to pay more than they should be to reach a bunch of cranky codgers just because the editorial stance of Fox is generally pro-corporate? If not, why isn't Fox trying to attract younger viewers, which you'd think would be a huge bottom-line boost?

it's possible that younger people don't need a cocoon full of other people who agree with them? they don't need to have their view reinforced, Network news also has geezer demos, are the ads the same on cable news?

Interesting points.

Contrary to what people often say over on the Oldies and Standards sections of this website, there are many advertisers who are targeting older consumers. They just don't buy radio much. But they do buy oldies TV and they buy cable and network news/talk.

Not all media buys are completely computerized and rational. Some advertisers buy what they like and what they (and all their friends) agree with.

Historically, younger people haven't paid much attention to current events or voted as much as their grandparents. Baby boomers were an exception. The draft can do that to young people. But no, everybody of any age tends to hang with people who agree with them and with whom they share interests and values. And people, of any age, turn to media for confirmation - not information.

The other thing is that the over-60 crowd doesn't relate to the reality TV fare that's on just about every other channel.

If you will think about that long and hard.... not just this afternoon... but maybe for several years, it is possible you will come join the club of us who say: People at any age turn to media for a combination of information and confirmation.

To quote a YouTube video that is quite amusing.... "I hope I am doing this right. I've never been old before. How would I know?" Yes, we all enjoy "hanging with" people of our own generation, and hanging with media aimed at our generation, but it is seldom a one-way street. People who used to go to the department store to see what fashions are in-style this year, also go to radio to see what complaints, what trends, what issues are in style this year.

I don't know whether this means anything, but I got my hair cut yesterday. Most of the men that go to this barber shop are old and gray, though the barber himself still has brown hair. I'm not that old but I am gray. Normally, he has on that program with Leeza Gibbons and Bill Rancic, but yesterday he had on CNN.

I resemble that! God - I hate fake "reality" programming!! However, even at age 62, I get most of my news from the internet and NPR. I rarely tune in CNN - especially since their bizarre 24/7 coverage of Flight 370..."Nothing has happened since yesterday, and here is our panel of experts to talk about that...".

Though I'm mostly a liberal, I don't need my views validated by MSNBC, and I'd rather flog myself than watch FoxNews...except for the occasional comic relief.
