First Dan Lewis, now Jean Enerson...

Do we think Gannett shoved her out or has this been brewing?

I would estimate she has been anchoring around 50% of her scheduled 5PM and 6:30PM newscasts over the last year. She was announced as the anchor of the 7PM, but after only a few months on that newscast (as I predicted, here) she'd ceded most of them (and more recently, all of them) to Matsukawa.

The biggest problem with her working her limited schedule (not doing the late news is one thing, not doing many of her scheduled newscasts is another) is branding and image. How can you promote, brand, and sell your newsteam when your #1 team (Bounds and Enerson) is seen on such a limited number of newscasts? You should be pushing and building around Bounds and Matsukawa but when Matsukawa is technically not your lead anchor, you've got a problem.

Oh my goodness! Can't believe, after over 40 years, she is calling it quits! I hope Jean enjoys her retirement as much as she did doing the news with Dennis Bounds, Barry Judge, Mike James, etc. etc.
I wonder the same thing as well - now that Belo was taken over, I wonder if Gannett has been telling her "come on Jean, you've done far too long than most people have. Call it quits." Wonder if she would go on for many more years if Belo hadn't gotten bought out.

I grew up with Jean and wish her a well-deserved retirement!!

Sadly, Gannett simply didn't want to pay Jean's expensive salary anymore. Gannett has done the same thing around the country, letting longtime expensive anchors go and promoting younger cheaper anchors.

I also agree that she was frequently absent. Even when she was there, she anchored at most 4 days per week (off almost every Friday). I agree that it's hard to build a franchise around that type of schedule.

That said, who is going to replace her? Of course, the obvious choice is Lori. However, there are also Margaret (who could make a return to news) or Joyce (who was brought in 25 years ago to be Jean's heir apparent). Or they could go with someone else like Shaniqua, Mimi (who's a favorite of mine) or (god forbid) Meg.

Not Lori, please. I think that Gannett will bring in a young, fresh, cheaper face. Look for all the stalwarts at KING to be slowly "retired." Dennis, Lori, Suzannah, Linda Brill, Linda Byron, Jim Forman. Too high priced. Gannett will give up ratings shares to get the cost down.

Damn folks, she's 70 years old. Two big names at another station recently passed away and another big name retired. KOMO people aside, how could you not think about retiring?

There's nothing in the article that says she was pushed out. If you want to do the usual corporate bashing without any facts, then do so.

But if you really care about Enersen's legacy, talk about what she has accomplished. Read Lacitis' article, there's a good starter list.

We knew this day was coming. And the deal was amicable.

When you hire brand new spankin people nobody really gives a flip about in Seattle, your ratings go down! No one wants to watch a new anchor stumble and stumble some more. Gannett seems to be too cheap - just like Sinclair. Like I said, Belo would have probably kept Jean for many more years, because that corporation knows that Seattle TV viewers know Jean and not really Mimi or Meg. Many KING-5 viewers have watched Jean Enersen since she started around 1968! I wouldn't want all of my news anchors replaced by 20-something kids out of journalism school, in one of the top 20 markets in America?
Over at KIRO, Steve Raible has been on for probably 25 years or more, and people know him a lot. Hopefully he isn't kicked off soon - I liked him when I was in Seattle!

A couple of thoughts from Jean's last night ... looks like Brian Williams recognized her on the Nightly News as a ground breaking female anchor, which was a classy touch.

For the last 18 months, I've noted (and pointed out here) that Jean was slowly withdrawing from prominence at KING. Many of the promos had her in it, but often times on her own, away from the anchor desk. Most frequently, Dennis was shown with Lori, and Jean was pictured solo (though the latest promo shown at the first commercial break during a newscast once again showed her at the desk with Dennis) Additionally, there was a big uptick in Jean Enersen Healthlink promos. She turns 70 on Monday ... while Gannett may have made the final push, I suspect this has been in the works for a long time.

As I mentioned up thread, she helped launch the 7PM newscast, then slowly slipped away from it. She backed off her newscast schedule substantially. Even when she is on set, Lori Matsukawa is ever present, reporting from the newsroom or a standup on set. Arguably, Lori has been more visible as the lead anchor over the last eighteen months than Jean. She's always there, whether at the desk or on set. Jean, on the other hand, is gone more often than not.

I'll miss Jean Enersen. She is so professional on the set, rarely letting her guard down. And while her farewell to her co-anchors today was subdued (compared to Dan Lewis' farewell), she obviously has a good relationship with Dennis, Jeff and Paul. Its also nice to note that while she cycled through many male co-anchors in her early career (Mike James, Don Porter, Aaron Brown and numerous others), her pairing with Dennis Bounds for the last twenty years has been outstanding. While they were obviously both comfortable with the role in Seattle, we've been spoiled by the quality job they've done. They easily could have been an anchor pair in a top five market, they were that good. And their ratings reflected that.

What a career.

I am not going to watch KING news anymore, just because Gannett runs the station like Cheap Channel runs their radio lineup. If she really is leaving against her will, I hope their ratings take a MAJOR dive (sometimes that is the only way to show a company what they messed up).

I hate the Gannett crawler on the bottom. WBIR in Knoxville uses this and it is actually distracting. Their website is also crap.

Just wait until Wednesday, KING 5 has already announced that they are going to the Gannett format, which should quickly hasten the station's demise. Thank goodness Jean got out before the Gannettizing of KING 5.

Soon, the whole news set will turn bright RED during Breaking News!!!

This is just a travesty. Think about how long KING news has been a staple in Seattle, with long term hosts and quality news coverage. Gannet is going to destroy everything that Below maintained.

KING will take a major dive with a brand new set. This might be more annoying than the graphics that are on right now (with the KING-5 logo twirling every 30 seconds). A set that turns bright red during breaking news? Give me a break.
How are KPNX's ratings, by the way in Phoenix? Are they low as well?
Sure glad KIRO seems to be OK. Steve Raible is a good anchor. Angela, maybe not so much. I miss Steve and Susan Hutchinson!

You guys who have all the answers and are certain of KING's imminent demise are truly special.

I am only somewhat kidding about the BRIGHT red! KPNX's set at their previous location did in fact turn bright red for breaking news. Their current set is not as bad, but still turns red. KING's plans to be "Gannetized" are detailed in a report on KING5.com.

As for KPNX, they used to trounce everyone else at 5, 6, and 10pm in 2005. But, then, Gannett started replacing the experienced anchors and reporters with newer, cheaper talent. And their ratings took a nosedive...they still sometimes win at 6 and 10pm, but just barely. Since Gannett also owns the Arizona Republic newspaper, we don't get frequent ratings updates here (unless KPNX wins some timeslot). KPNX used to compete vigorous, now it seems like they don't even try much of the time.

I wonder if KING will also get the boring, generic Gannett news theme. The only thing that will help KING is that KOMO is now owned by the notoriously bad Sinclair.

Well thank goodness Sinclair hasn't brought back "News Central" - that would be a nightmare to KOMO and the ratings. And in a top 20 market, that would not go well. I'm still not surprised on how Sinclair is running KDNL like a pass-through ABC station in St. Louis. There used to be news years ago. Now, First Business airs at 6:30, Family Feud at 5PM, Modern Family at 6/6:30, and Millionaire at 10PM. And don't forget - they still have Maury...on an *ABC* station!
