Chris Ebbott Named New KRTH PD

From what I've heard this is not the best possible news for K-EARTH 101, as we knew her!
Well, at least not for those who have advocated broader playlists for KRTH. Ebbott knows how to use all the research tools, including song testing, though, and that's good news for CBS.

I doubt that we will ever again have "broader playlists" on terrestrial radio. K.M., can you or David tell me exactly what a program director does and why KRTH even needs one? "Good morning, Gary, Shotgun, Jim, Charlie, Sky, Sylvia! Here are the songs I want you to play over and over and over and over and over, and twice each hour you have to run ten minutes of commercials." Surely there is more to the job than that. ("Yes there is...and don't call me Shirley.")

That was so dripping with sarcasm, I am disinclined to answer the question.

Program directors have not picked the music for many decades in most formats. They are the curators of the song lists that the listeners have selected via music testing.

What PDs do is extensive. Daily music logs, generally involving hours a week of editing and fine tuning, are just the start. Airchecking and guiding the talent takes considerable time, as do things like scheduling for vacations, weekend talent or voice tracking and such. Writing liners and sweepers and promos, plus getting those not delivered live is a regular chore. Working on sales based promotions with management, developing station promotions and other such tasks are also part of the job. Time sheets, HR and contracts are another part of the duties. Meetings online with other similar format stations in a company are often done to share experiences. Meetings with the manager and the group PD over operations, budgets, legal matters and such are also part of the job. Plus there are all kinds of reports for HR, EEO compliance and such to maintain. And the biggest new part of the job is new media integration, ranging from the station site two tweets and Facebook presence. And then add in ratings and research analysis and it's a pretty extensive job

Isn't the Program Director also somewhat responsible for changing Talent when the sound of the station changes? I have a friend who does weekends at K-EARTH and the vibe doesn't seem very positive right now?

There are RR, just not in L.A.....That ended sometime in the 80's (on KRTH anyways).
You gotta think small town radio.

Is Grand Rapids considered to be a "small town"? WGVU boasts a 5000-song playlist. Golly gee!

http://www.wgvu.org/realoldies/

That's a non-com, and it includes oldies as well as talk / NPR programming. It's an AM, on the rather miserable 1480 frequency and simulcast with 850 AM in Muskegon. The Grand Rapids rankin in 25-54 is 31st, out of 30 commercial and 10 non-coms in the MSA.

It's run by Grand Valley State University.

A 5000 song playlist is what you get when you cross academics with radio.

That's one of many that I didn't get on my list. Of course, hiring is one of the functions of a PD, and so is the dreaded task of letting someone go.

Hey, it's radio, what more can one ask for? At least someone has the guts to play music that's all but forgotten otherwise. Good for them.
