KPLZ Changes

I haven't listened to KPLZ since it was pop in the 80's and I think Ron Harris was still one of its DJs.

That said, there was a reference to "office" listening in this thread somewhere. I wonder how many of these AC stations' ratings are affected by decreased listening in offices to radio stations on an actual radio?

It's been acknowledged by many on the RadioDiscussions forums that young people like to listen to "radio" on their smartphone, tablet, or possibly desktop computer. Increasing numbers of them don't even have radios -- except maybe in their car.

But in the office? Maybe there are less radios in offices now than there used to be. Maybe the younger listeners in offices listen on their computers to Pandora or whatever.

When I read of shows like Delilah getting dropped from stations, I just wonder why. She used to appeal to a lot of women, including a lot of younger women. I remember you'd walk into some stores and gas stations and her show would be on the radio coming through the speakers in the ceiling. She was everywhere.

Kind of wondered that too, she was rated near the top on most stations that carried her. Maybe her format just didn't sustain itself with more women getting tattoos and riding motorcycles, her program may have been "too polite"?

But then, thinking if the others who are MOR, are being dropped then it could be about the $$$ contracts. They may have gotten too expensive in the age of ad sales declining.

Unfortunately, in this day and age, there is a shortage of "too polite". That's why I will most likely end up spending my money on trying to start an ill fated radio station rather than wasting it on a woman.

It seems like just a few years ago you would hear KWRM on in every single medical office or business office.

It seems like before they flipped to a "younger audience format," KWJZ was always on in every medical office as well. Now there's only a tiny 1560 AM station for that format of Smooth Jazz - and it hardly gets out of Pierce County. Try 1560 in Bellevue or Issaquah. You'll hear a LOT of noise.

Hey i'm just wondering, why do you listen to Y94? What is the programming like in comparison to what is available in Seattle?

Musically, there's not much difference between KPLZ, KQMV, KBKS, and WDAY, it's a combination of all 3. The thing is though, you'd never guess Fargo and Yakima were similar sized markets. It seems to me like Y94 could pull big numbers in any market up to maybe Milwaukee. They've also got great personalities. It's kind of a party station as most CHRs are, but I don't find it so over the top that I don't like it when I'm in certain moods. They fit just about anything.

you nailed it right on the spot
I was living in Fargo for a couple years
And Y94 tend to domanate ratings-wise (behind Sister KFGO)

Queue the myriad of radio programming experts who believe that a wide and varying playlist is just like cinderblocks tied to a dingy.

Y94 is clearly CHR, not a nitch format. However, they do cover every angle of the format. They've probably got about 350 songs in rotation as opposed to the usual 200 or so on a typical CHR. Y94 still dominates over there. Oddly, the CHR on KLTA doesn't seem to be taking a bite out of them as much as it's hurting KQWB and KMJO.

Well if Y94 has a broad playlist, the listeners probably do not need to switch channels very often because there is a variety of music. You say that a typical CHR station has 200 songs, but I doubt that KBKS in Seattle has that many. Sure, they may have the potential to play 200 different songs, but the songs in active rotation definitely do not account for 200.

You can see exactly how many songs any CC station plays on the station's website, I guess you have to type "music" into the search box. Last I looked, they had 181 songs in rotation. I actually monitored KQMV via the playlist on their website for about 12 hours I think it was back in November, but maybe it was November of a year ago. In that 11 or 12 hour period, the powers got 10 spins while the number of unique songs was 51.

I will have to check that feature out. I want to find out how many songs they actually play on KJR. Clear Channel is laughable when you consider how the playlist of most of their stations are structured. Not to give the other stations in town a "pass", though...

Speaking of KJR-FM, it looks like they made yet another format tweak. Perhaps its time for a new thread or something.
