This would be an interesting change. Back in the 1980's and 1990's, WRKS' "Kiss-FM" and WBLS are both are in the urban race, but it has been on these two stations for a long until "Kiss-FM" went off in 2012 to make way for ESPN Radio and brought in half of ex-"Kiss-FM's" listeners to WBLS and it gained good ratings. And now, 3 years later, they're going to do it again this year.
According to Scott Fybush this week that WFAS-FM will flip to urban for the July 4th weekend since it's moving from Westchester to the Bronx, are they're going to compete with its rival WBLS like they used to do with the former "Kiss-FM" for many years? Tune in next time and WFAS-FM will be flipping to urban.
This week will be the final week of WFAS as an AC station. Stunting will be coming up soon.

They're having a launch party tomorrow at Sylvia's in harlem. I think it maybe a return of Kiss-Fm
Why would they be having a launch party over a week before the station goes on air? Makes no sense.
Maybe they are flipping tomorrow or this is all just disinformation kind of like how they kept us guessing with 94.7.
From what I read on another site All Access was reporting the launch party would be on Wed. 6/25, not tomorrow. Could just be rumors flying.

According to Thomas Boston on the Dentist Board that WFAS-FM will go dark on July 3rd at 12:00 AM and the flip will take place on July 4th. No word on what the DJ's will do their final shows, but my guess will be either Friday or maybe July 3rd or WFAS-FM will go automated until the station goes off. Will see what happens.
Too bad it is only for an hour. It would be nice to have a full day to see what comes in on that frequency. That one hour for me will likely be more interesting than the coming beat to death Urban format.
All you would hear is a bunch of pirates.
that's more than an hour if it goes off at 12am on July 3 and comes back on the 4th at 1pm. That's 37 hours.
By the way urban AC is not beat to death in New York. In fact only WBLS is the only other station with an urban AC format. Given the demographics of New York, that's not a lot.

agreed but I wonder what the pirates will do once 103.9 moves to the Bronx. Granted some of the pirates are incredibly strong but 103.9 will create a lot of interference.
I hope the FCC is aware of the issue or it may also be difficult to hear 103.9 with any clarity south of the Bronx.

Not sure why I thought it was 11:59pm July 3rd to 1am July 4th. I guess I confused it with the typical IT maintenance window I have to deal with. Oh goody.
As far as music formats the majority are geared to minority groups and women.
I hope they at least let Cumulus have the frequency for the city when they go live. I could care less or would be fine if a pirate took over the frequency with an Alternative format in Rockland, Westchester (except for Southern Westchester) and Northern Bergen.
It would also tune in if during those 37 hours a pirate took over the frequency with an Alternative format.

I wish the FCC needs to pull the plug on those lousy pirate stations on 103.9, because they will make way to urban AC coming July 4th.
Whoever runs any of the lousy pirate stations at 103.9 needs to go to jail, just like in a Monopoly game. I hope the pirate stations needs to shut them down.

60 years being a local Westchester county station representing it's community thrown away. IMHO, anything outside of the red zone and Rockland County is fair game.

Your support of the lack of diversity and the corporate monopoly stranglehold on the "public" air waves makes you part of the problem.
I hope the pirates bring it on! Lets hear Alternative or a diversity of formats outside of that red line contour.

Radio stations are a business, and businesses exist to make money. Obviously if Alternative was a profitable format there would be radio stations playing it, believe me. But in reality that is not the case. There are always those 1 or 2 dance fans on here telling everyone how dance and EDM are the "next big thing", and that it's catching on, blah blah blah. Well they tried it in Boston and the station only lasted a year. That's what "diversity" gets you. Radio stations that appeal to the masses are the ones that make money. Luckily for everyone else, there are a myriad of other free music sources to hear exactly the type of music you like.
Personally I'm looking forward to this new station. Urban AC (assuming that is the format) is one of my favorite types of music, and it will be nice to have an alternative to WBLS.

Radio stations are a business but these frequencies are licensed by the public through the FCC. The FCC has proven themselves to be useless in allocating frequencies based on geographic region by allowing the WFAS license to be moved out of Westchester. They blantantly allow monopolies that limit cultural diversity to dominate the market.
If this is simply about allowing free markets to reign then the FCC has no right to exist and so called pirates should not be penalized. Therefore any business should be able to put up a stick on 103.9 or some other frequency in Rockland or Bergen county and let them compete.
