Howie signs with Global Media Services

via Tom Taylor:
>>Boston-based talk host Howie Carr signs with Tony Garcia’s new Global Media Services. Garcia calls him “an icon and legend in New England, and I look forward to partnering with him to bring his unique views on politics, pop culture and society to the entire nation.”

(Mentions his 15 affiliates, Radio Hall of Fame...)

>>Carr’s heard in Boston from 3-7pm on Entercom’s talk WRKO (680), which is the station that fought so hard to keep him from jumping to Greater Media. Before moving to Denver to work with RegionalHelpWanted.com, Garcia led the Charlotte-based syndication of Bob & Sheri.

Hey, this could be big--instead of having merely 15 or so affiliates he may wind up with as many as..
..16. And he could do his show from Fla. or something if he wanted to.

A legend in his own mind and a self created icon. Remember, he bought his entry into the Radio Hall of Fame unlike real talent who entered the old fashion way.... the EARNED it.

Howie failed everywhere outside of New England. What appeal does he have outside of the region? Howie's a regional guy with regional appeal. What does Howie have to offer that isn't already being done better by other hosts out there?

The most well-known talk host right now in Boston.

The most well read guy on statehouse politics past and present.

The highest paid (?) talk host in Boston.

A talk host who can promote his show through his column, and can promote his column through his radio show.

...I think these are facts that go beyond "in his own mind".

Exactly--Jerry Williams is not coming that door, fans; Gene Burns and David Brudnoy are not coming through that door. As I said regarding appeal, yeah he is mostly New England-based but can cover some national topics--as I said he has filled in for KFI, for Dennis Miller and Mark Levin, etc. One way to poss. do this is to have 2 or 3 national hours, then one local (assuming RKO will sign up). His features like Max Robins on TV, Dr John de Jung on pet matters, and some pop culture can be worked in). The gangster stuff he covers in his books can work nationally, perhaps.

If it's in his own mind, why did RKO fight to keep him when he tried to flee to WTKK? Yeah the Radio Hall of Fame thing he admits was taking advantage of "stuff the ballot box for me". I was kidding a bit when I said 15, hey maybe he get up to 16 affiliates. Nobody is expecting him to get the affiliate count that Rush has, but he prob could do better than what the prog talk hosts might be getting now. (Is Mike Malloy on 6 stations or only 5?)
