The corporation has really sold. The lede story on World Report and World at Six: The World Cup. Canada is not in. Hasn't been for years. Canada is not really a soccer country. But the CBC has the TV rights to it. They lost hockey. They don't have the CFL. They don't have major league baseball. So, they are puffing hell out of the World Cup. Just as they did for the Winter Olympics. Apparently Radio One news judgement is determined by whatever sport is on CBC television.

As long as Toronto is making money with their soccer team, that's good enough for CBC.
There seems to be just the right amount of soccer fans to satisfy the ad revenue portion required to keep the lights on.
Sure, taxes are also keeping the lights on, but CBC isn't as foolish as you think.
They were able to trade some CBC television shows for BBC shows-program for program at no cost to either party.
Plus, they were also able to get some Australian programming in direct exchange for some CBC shows.
I know nothing about what ratings will be like, but it's the idea and thought that counts at this point.
Good for CBC for trying something new. All I can do at this point is wish them good luck!
It's an effort made by CBC to at least try and keep the lights on with their most current budget, so good for them!

I have no objection to CBC making a little money with soccer on TV. What I object to is turning CBC News on Radio One into a promotional or sales vehicle for soccer or any other TV programming.
They seem to have moved on from the World Cup and now CBC News is puffing a Wimbledon - not just at the end of major news broadcasts, World Report and The World at Six, but as the lead in those shows.

CBC Sports, I'm afraid, is in danger of being run into the ground. Years ago, it was the place to go for the NHL, Major League Baseball and international sports. Nowadays, it's just going down the tubes.
