the new urban Radio 103.9

listening online the stations sounds great. They've been mixing all weekend and have a very distinct sound unlike WBLS. All music so far has been old school and classic hip, hop. It will be interesting to see if it will become more mainstream when regular programming starts on Monday.

Am interested in hearing any reports on the signal. With the numerous pirates on 103.9 I'm wondering if there's interference. I have another week before I'm back to the city to check for myself.
 
This station's Achilles heel will be transmitter power. WFAS-FM (I believe the new call letters will be WNBM) is a suburban Class A signal. It will certainly cover Westchester County and it should be heard reasonably well in the Bronx, but the signal will be spotty in the rest of the city and probably nonexistent in Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn and Queens. Due to the congestion in the Boston-Washington urban corridor, it is not possible to upgrade this station to a Class B or B1, as the allocation is boxed in by other 103.9 allocations in Jenkintown, PA and elsewhere, as well as adjacent channel Class B allocations in Newton, NJ, Atlantic City, NJ, and Allentown, PA. The competition, WBLS, is a full Class B that blankets the entire New York market. Its only interference is in Warren County, New Jersey, where it receives some co-channel interference from a station in Boyertown, PA.
 
The tower is in the Bronx, which isn't exactly suburban. I do, however, agree that the signal could be an issue. As I've mentioned in some other posts, I'm not sure I would've gone urban AC with 103.9, but Cumulus had the right idea doing some derivative of urban.
 
Radio 103.9 has moved the transmitter to the Bronx so the signal is covering most of the city. They're no longer a suburban Westchester station.

The signal is not terrible but i think wvip signal is just a pinch better. Radio 103.9 audio sounds like its in mono, it just doesnt have the crispness as WBLS or other NYC stations do and it doesnt have RDS yet. It sounds like a nice station so far

I'm in West Orange, NJ and the 103.9 signal is booming in loud and clear. It sounds even better than WVIP from my location. The pirates that were on this frequency in the Newark area are long gone so there is no interference.

I do notice the signal often switches between stereo and mono and its happening on several different radios. Don't know if its a reception issue or broadcast issue.

I've been listening all morning and I'm liking this station a lot. They are playing a lot of slower and older R&B that I haven't heard in years.

While there's a definite demographic to target in other parts of the tri-state, due to signal limitations I think they're realistic about primarily targeting Harlem and the Bronx. They held the launch party at Sylvia's in Harlem after all. I'm sure the signal is usable in most of the 5 boroughs but there are certainly pockets where it's not.
