Stream listener rippers

Lavf52 .....I see this quite a lot as the "user agent" in the control panel. I was looking at a forum and it said these folks are ripping off my stream. WHAT EXACTLY IS THAT?

Are they just recording and saving it for future listening? I doubt they would want to re-broadcast music with dead air between the songs (unless, internet broadcasting). Which device do they use for that?

On the forum some people say they are banning the I.P. addresses. One poster said they pushed her up to the next ROYALTY fee level.

Lavf52 is NOT a ripper but Cellular Phone apps like TuneIn, rad.io and even XiiaLive shows up as Lavf52 (I know it tested this on my Radio station). There are a lot of parinoid folks out there too worried about rippers. Now the following Are Rippers: Winamp 5.0 (winamp has been using versions way higher than 4.0 for years), StreamRipper, TapinRadio but you can listen to the station with it as well as simply record tracks. RadioTracker, and a few others.

Honestly I've said this time and time again. People will tape from the Radio we did it as kids (Most of us) and Internet Radio is the same way. Instead of pulling the hair out of your head try asking for donations when you know you have rippers. I've done it like this:

ATTENTION TapinRadio, RadioTracker, StreamRipper users we know you record our station just like people did as kids. The only thing we ask is that you make a donation to The Legacy on our web site so we can share the love of music. We have to pay Royalties for each listener we get so please do the right thing and keep Internet Radio alive. After that I received a $300 donation. So use lemons and make lemon aid. Make donation announcements after every third song and you'll get those donations as these people will feel like "Hey these folks play the songs I want to save and they know I'm doing it so I'll pitch in". All will be well yes you'll always have leaches that happens in life, but you'll be surprised at the number of donations you'll receive if you have a paypal donation link on your site.

The problem is, sites such as Live365 say it is illegal to record their streams. Personally, I don't care if someone records mine, but I would not go around asking for donations from people who are doing it.

Do you ask ANYONE to donate? How do you know when you are addressing people who DON'T record, and when you are addressing people who DO record?

Do you have the LEGAL "authority" to permit, allow, encourage, tolerate recording by someone? Doesn't the owner of the music own that authority?

I don't ask for any donations.

About three years ago, the stream below which I maintain was hosted by a different Shoutcast provider that used London based servers. We were inundated with European rippers, particularly Germany. The metadata for the next song went on the internet some 10 or 15 seconds before I could see it. The Europeans would just pile on the stream if there was a song of interest. I was even going to start a German pledge drive! (thanks to Google Translate) But we pulled the plug with that provider, our current provider has our stream here in the States on a Phoenix based server. The percentage of sessions 2 to 5 minutes is considerably lower now, about 16%.

No ads, no donations...is your streaming cost rather high? The Roadhouse stream is somewhat eclectic and is a "niche" player in the world of internet radio, so we don't get slammed too hard. I can't be too specific, other than to say for a month, it's less than dinner out for two at a typical sit-down restaurant.

I'm in a co-op group on Live365's X5000 plan and my entire cost is $200.00 / year. I've already broken even on that cost for the year, via Live 365 VIP subscriber listeners.

What is the CO OP program? LIVE won't let me see it unless I sign up. BUT, at this page it looks like their regular montly cost is around $200. You're getting a big discount!

The X5000 plan is a bridge between the Personal and Pro broadcast packages at Live365. The only fee an X5000 broadcaster pays is the SoundExchange small webcaster royalty fee of $2,000 a year, which is divided between 10 individual broadcasters of a co-op group. Each group member contributes $200 towards the SoundExchange royalty fee. The co-op group leader handles all the paperwork required for every member in the group.

So you each have your own station there? Or are the 10 of you splitting something? How do you get money from the VIP members?

I don't think I want to make another station but I might want to relay my signal.

I would have to confirm with the group leader, but I think he has 4 streams and then 6 of us have one stream each to make up the rest of the group.

Live365 gives bounty rewards to broadcasters who attain VIP listeners. The more VIP listeners you have, the more you earn.

TAKE THAT YOU RIPPERS.....

I noticed tonight that 5 came on at the exact time (but were listed from different locations) in the U.S. Their user agent even said xxxxx/ripper. Now how did they connect at the same exact time from different cities???? Something was up!

Anyway, I had few listeners at the time......and caught the rippers in minute 14. So....I just played about 15 seconds of 10 songs in a row.....and they got the message and left.
