The RIAA is messing with Uncle Ricky

It's probably taken them months, if not years, for a few staffers (who obviously would have to have paid for access to the site out of their own pockets) to investigate exactly what RR has.

It's depressing, but not unexpected given the letter of the rule. (dale LATIMER)

As a long-time supporter of ReelRadio, I thank you for that sentiment, even if it's obvious (to me, anyway) that you played You Don't Know Jack far too much with that Flickerlick Testgum ... er, Gibberish Question.

Update: Ricky has installed a full-time version of Aircheck Channel on the site, which was designed to meet the specific standards the RIAA called him out on. And there are other behind-the-scenes discussions taking place ... some with lawyers, others with members of Congress.

This story is going to play out for a while. In the interim, I'm sure getting more $20/year subscriptions would help grow the war chest, or at least keep RR afloat while this is in flux.

Well as far as members of Congress, that's certainly not going to be a short term solution, as I've discussed elsewhere.

The statement in the OP gives a little insight into the kind of detail covered in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. It was a terrible law, and compliance with it is killing internet radio. If the RIAA has its way, these rules will someday apply to OTA radio. I've been in rooms with music industry representatives who are upset that performers have no say in how or when their music gets used on the air. When Michael Jackson died, it took over 24 hours for his representatives to approve digital outlets to launch tribute channels. Meanwhile OTA radio had been running such programming from the moment his death was confirmed. Anyone who has anything to do with digital radio knows what I'm talking about, and it's why the industry prefers direct negotiations with rights holders than any federal regulation.

I've contributed to ReelRadio for almost 10 years. I hope it doesn't mean the end of ReelRadio as Uncle Ricky has put his life into the site.
