Jimi Hendrix at 5 AM on WBT?

I couldn't believe my ears. WBT has featured a version of the "Star Spangled Banner" for years - first to open the 6 o'clock hour each morning, Mon - Fri, and in more recent years, just before the 5 AM newscast. Most days, it's Whitney Houston's Superbowl version.

Imagine my surprise while I happened to be listening one morning this week, when the Jimi Hendrix version from Woodstock popped on the air out George Noory's "Coast to Coast AM" theme. I can't imagine what those in the upper demos that WBT is famous for thought of that maneuver.

I understand the need for stations like WBT to lower their demos, but a screeching, feedback-laden, guitar solo
by Hendrix, even the "Star Spangled Banner", is not likely to help their cause. Sorry, that's just a bad idea.

You may forget that Woodstock was 45 years ago. So the people who loved Hendrix as a kid are now 65 years old listening to WBT.

Ah, you again! Didn't forget Woodstock at all. Just a guess, but I don't think too many from that era fav-r the "Star Spangled Banner" as Jimi's most cherished work. Especially at 5 in the morning on an AM news/talk station! Of course, you being who you are will dispute that.

No "A", I didn't. Didn't forget Woodstock at all. Just a guess, but I don't think too many from that era consider the "Star Spangled Banner" as their preferred Jimi Hendrix cut. In demo or not. Especially at 5 in the morning on an AM news/talk station! But I'm sure you'll dispute that.

Hendrix? Iconic. But I agree with Sherlock. Suggestion: Make it local. Invite listeners/musicians to record TSSB, which BTW, is one of the hardest music pieces to sing because of range in which it's written/sung.

Encourage and use instrumentals and vocals from the locals. Stockpile and rotate the best selections from middle schools, high schools, community groups and professional musicians.

Tie it into a theme. Short of making it a contest, make it a promotion. Produce a "best of" CD. Market the CD with net proceeds going to a local hospital, children's cause or veterans' center.

I remember when Hendrix did that, it wasn't very popular with most people not even the Woodstock Generation. Plus who wants to hear something like that at 5am? Duh!
