That's no bull: 101.7 doubles its ratings

Up to slightly more than double what it had as EDM. And WKLB goes down a point. I won't give actual numbers.
Also saw that in morning drive (don't know actual) demo top 3 are #1 WZLX, #2 Dennis & Callahan & Mini-hen on WEEI,
and #3 Touch-Me-In-the-Morning and Rich from Sports Hub (that info via https://twitter.com/GlobeChadFinn )

Radio Insight tweet at: https://twitter.com/radioinsight

>>Big first month for “101.7 The Bull” WBWL Boston as it debuts at (see tweet) up from 1.2 as Evolution, 102.5 WKLB drops from (see tweet)

Am leery of posting actual numbers --and admittedly this is 6 plus--but I can see the ratings via Tom Taylor now. In THAT
demo WBWL is one tenth of a point behind WRKO. WEEI FM is four tenths of a point in front of Sports Hub. Rankings:
1.Kiss
2.ROR
3.ZLX
4.WKLB
5.WMJX
6. WBZ news radio
7.Mix 104.1
8. Hot 96.9
9.WBUR
10. Jamn 94.5
11. WODS
12. WEEI-FM
13.BOS
14. WAAF (the station some folks say should dump rock and // WEEI or WRKO...)
15.WRKO
16. WBWL The Bull
17.Sports Hub
18. WGBH
19. The River
etc
Again these are 6+

Bleh, big deal. Too bad the music still sucks. A majority of people have bad taste in music, we already knew that. I mean, Justin Bieber sells out concerts. But what apparently it's ok to do at these yeehaw concerts, is to get so drunk that rape simply happens while people sit back and take photos. Sure, blaming EDM or Hip hop is easy, but for some reason because it's yeehaw country it doesn't get 1/3 the scrutiny. That's indeed some BULL.

Some of the songs get dangerously close to having a melody or a bit of twang. Agreed...it seems to lure the young'uns who want to party--and indeed someone should count up how many songs in a row mention beer, booze in general, or partying.

@bostonradio tweets:
>>If you're wondering how Bull 101.7 did in its 1st full ratings survey. Went from #20 as EDM to #12 as country. Audience from 276k to 407k/wk...Signal will never get better and they'll never sniff 102.5's #'s but they're helping to keep Kiss108 at top of target demos

>>you can sell Bro' country to mainstream even with a (crappy) signal. EDM is niche+(crappy) signal=death

>>Summer is a wacky time w/ppl's schedules and listening patterns. Let's wait&see what September numbers are going to look like...Then again, they're running commercial free from Jun.13 to Sep 1 so will see how the Bull does when the ads appear....

Reportedly the bull's share and cume in one month has beaten anything WFNX was able to do in all those years? Folks are saying it's the highest numbers ever attained on 101.7 in Boston. Does anyone with a full view know if this is true?

It's certainly higher than anything I've seen 101.7 get for at least the past decade, maybe two. If 101.7 ever approached or beat those numbers before, it may have been back in the early '80s heyday of "New Wave" that WFNX (and previously briefly WLYN-FM) helped to usher in, but they were up against then-popular WBCN and others at that time.

Certainly the highest numbers since the transmitter was moved downtown.

That is a total racist remark, I guess the Bull is too Red Neck and White for your one-sided taste. Rap and hip hop are racist formats but you will defend them. I will take Country over that crap anyday.

Boo hoo hoo

It's just business. Don't like it? Tough. ClearChannel is a person too.

The high ratings WROR and WZLX are getting reinforce the fact that WODS lost a bigger audience with more money to spend and "gained" a younger and significantly smaller audience with more debt and less money to spend. I know that radio management types continue to prefer a younger audience but is that audience listening and buying from their advertisers? Aside from that, the CHR pie is still being sliced in many pieces.

Yes. Younger, with less money is a preferred audience. American business makes much more from the interest than it does on the profit made on the actual product.

We have elevated profits over people to an art form in this business.

I'm sure CBS Boston is much happier with less than half the numbers of twenty-somethings listening to "Amp 103.3" than with more than twice the numbers of (us) fifty-somethings that listened to the former Classic Hits format.

Last week in Pittsburgh CC shifted cons talk WPGB to country as Big 104.7; it was speculated for a long time but there was little advance warning when the shift came other than some announcements saying that the talk shows were moving to WJAS 1320 (which had been standards...and their audience wasn't happy). Now they too are going after that younger audience, with competition being WDSY 107.9 and a trio of "Froggy" stations in various places. So again, going after the younger audience...meanwhile those who liked conserv. talk were upset (again, as were the WJAS listeners!) I think the new owners of WJAS may even be running things from the CC studios...and the "new" WJAS as far as I know hasn't put out a facebook and the website I think still says "under construction". Seriously, you couldn't just type in the lineup and do a quick facebook link? No streaming yet?

Admittedly I guess the transition was supposed to be later, maybe Labor Day, so things were a bit rushed. But CC again
wanted to get that young country audience going to their new station while the older folks who tend to like talk wind up
with a weaker AM signal to go to, with little care for social media as of yet. CC is going all out, with the website and facebook, visibility in the community, etc Yeah get that brand new Big 104.7 van out there to a country concert and spread the word just as they did with the Bull. (And CC has same objectives--pick up a share of country audience and protect some of their other stations) Sound familiar?

And this from the press release--again, sound familiar?: "“It’s a great day for Pittsburgh Country music fans as we launch Big 104.7, a fresh new take on Country music. This station will give our listeners a front-row seat to Country’s biggest artists and concerts,” said David Edgar, Vice President of Programming for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Pittsburgh. “Listeners will also enjoy waking up with The Bobby Bones Show and his unique and entertaining insight on Country music. No one is closer to the heart of Nashville than Bobby Bones.”

(And there were some rumors it would go sports--in the transition they tweaked some folks by saying "we're sure to be a big hit" followed by the sound of a baseball bat hitting a ball...)

I had assumed that WODS and WZLX would merge formats. Classic rock but pop hits too.

Classic pop hits apparently have aged much faster than classic rock. WDRC-FM Hartford tried to adjust by playing more '80s and '90s titles, but when new ownership came in, just about all the pop (and 100 percent of the soul and disco) disappeared and ultra-familiar classic rock tracks took its place. It seems odd that '80s pop and R&B hits, which only became part of oldies/classic hits formats within the past decade, now have nowhere to go for airplay, other than "retro weekend" features on AC stations. Who would have thought that Madonna and Michael Jackson would "age out" of commercial radio so soon!

Eli,

My sentiments exactly!

And if you're like me, theeir putting "Oldies 103.3" on HD-2, which, in reality, is akin to nothing more than a jukebox, is NOT going to cut it with our demographic. We're too smart for that. Unfortunately, we're also poweless to correct this travesty.

btw WJAS is streaming thru iHeart...oh and 5 yrs ago today WBCN left the terrestrial dial and Sports Hub debuted.
It was Aug 09 and we figured WEEI would eventually move to FM. They did...2 yrs and 1 month later
