Disney to dump 1250 AM

Disney selling off all radio except the LA Flagship station @ 710AM. Wonder if they will keep a radio network and allow independent people to franchise it ... or if 1250 will have to find another option.

"When you wish upon a star .... this job won't take you very far....."

From what I'm reading the network isn't going away - just the O&Os. The question becomes what will the new owners decide to do with the format.

Maybe flip back to R&B? Oh what the hell, IHR will buy it -just like they did KGY and a gazillion others. The days of K-FOX probably aren't coming back.
Or Entercom/CBS etc can buy it, and allow an HD2 to be simulcast, like just they did with 910 AM in Vancouver/Portland pre-CBS Sports.

50kw AM signal... extremely useful. 5kw high band channel... eh not so much. I can see why it would be tough to find a format for that station if Radio Disney disappears from the Seattle market. I'd still like to see AM oldies. Really now, why not if 1240 is flipping?

Sprince Arbogast and Maura Gallucci are still kicking around this market; where's Great Scott these days? Get the together and put KidStar back on the air.

"Seattle's Hottest Music!.....K-Fox...1250 Seattle....OW-OOOOO!!"

I could live with K-Fox coming back.....Just not that ugly financial and technical mess they had at the end of their run....

Too bad they're dumping all the stations. It's nice to hear some modern pop music on the AM dial from time to time. If the new owners don't keep Disney on,my guess is that the replacement format will probably be a Hispanic format, or another format catering to immigrants.

Maybe Radio Hancook (1450 KSUH & 1230 KWYZ) could by it and have a proper Seattle signal.

The only way I can see non-profit is a straight simulcast of KWSU on KKDZ. Seattle has no NWPR News station and KMWS only goes so far. We do have KUOW and KPLU which would pretty much saturate that however.
I would like AM Oldies, but I would also love either the old Kidstar (1140 in Las Vegas played with a local kids format for a few years to some success) or KKFX coming back.
But what's probably going to happen is Immaculate Heart Radio will buy it just to get more Catholic programs on AM. A niche format with 100 listeners in each market tops. And probably less with KBLE 1050.
Or, they'll just put 1250 silent and allow KWSU to "pop" in every night without kiddie pop interference.

Progressive Talk?

That would be a great choice for Seattle! Too many people miss Progressive Talk on 1090. And after pleas of "no more sports" they flipped to syndicated satellite CBS Sports. Waste of a frequency. KIRO serves Seattle sports just fine, and maybe KJR here and there. We don't need more than that.

I would ask for your proof of many people missing Progressive Talk on 1090, but I know what the response would be.

Like it or not, there's not enough of an appetite for left-wing talk radio. Even Air America, born at the height of the disdain for Bush 43, couldn't survive. That doesn't mean there is nobody who wants to hear Progressive Talk, it just means there's not enough people who wants to hear it.

Shouldn't there be a mix of talk stations? Too many right-wing stations - sometimes 4 or 5 in a market. There is a left side after all. 2 left wing, 2 right wing. You get your choice of talk!
After all, MSNBC gets huge ratings with Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz etc....

Not to be snide, but read my post again. There are people who would listen to Progressive Talk, but there's not enough people for a radio station to survive.

As disgusting as it sounds, there are likely people in this world who like ketchup on their ice cream. But there's probably not enough for Ben & Jerry's to produce such a flavor. There are likely people who would like polka-dotted cars, but not enough for GM or Ford to roll those off the assembly line. I hope you get the idea.

If I recall, the old Classic Country 1090 (KYCW) had a much wider following compared to KPTK. I'd love to see KYCW come back in full blown AM stereo, but KKXA does a fine job with the classic country format.

Maybe I am crazy, but I think it would be a bad idea to bring more public radio to the Seattle area. KUOW is fine, KPLU is fine, why do we need a Washington State University public radio station?

One more idea is for KNTB/KBRO moving to 1250 for ESPN Deportes, much better signal for ESPN Deportes. Then 1490 can become a station with full service Kitsap County programming and I don't care what happens to 1480.

Last time I checked it was LOADS of business talk and some political shows like Ray Lucia and The Roth Show, I know they air Gun Talk on weekends. Absolutely nothing local.
