David Gregory is leaving "Meet The Press"

After months of speculation, "Meet The Press" host David Gregory is leaving NBC News. Amid a swirl of stories that suggested that NBC News Political Correspondent Chuck Todd, was going to replace Gregory on "Meet The Press". Gregory became the host of Meet The Press in December, 2008. After the longtime host of the program Tim Russert died in June of that year. Gregory took to twitter after the news broke saying "I leave NBC as I came - humbled and grateful. I love journalism, and serving as moderator of MTP was the highest honor there is. I have great respect for my colleagues at NBC News and wish them all well. To the viewers, I say thank you."

Hmmm...not just leaving MTP, but also NBC News. That's a big deal. He's a smart guy who was treated badly. Like many others, he will survive and prosper.

Or like many others he will never be heard from again ... or go to academia ... or go to cable ... or get the heck out of the biz and do something else ... or get even and write a tell all book ... or make Robin Williams type exit. Just because Trekkers keep saying "live long and prosper," doesn't mean everybody does. I favor the write a tell-all book theory. As Klingons (and Sicilians) say, "Revenge is a dish best served cold."

Unfortunately for NBC's PR department, he's too young for them to say he's retiring.

And treated badly? How so? Twenty years is a long time in this business, especially at NBC. The show was foundering and a change had to be made. Gregory should know that as well as anybody. Ann Curry was treated badly. So was Conan. So was Letterman. So was Howard. Not Gregory.

He was treated badly in the last few weeks, as though HE was the reason MTP was floundering. He wasn't. That's like saying Rush is the reason talk radio is floundering. He isn't. But he's still on the air. To me, this is part of a bigger problem. Replacing Gregory won't solve that problem. But it gets him out of the way and out of the news for a while. Nothing is worse than working at a job and reading that your bosses are going to replace you. Then again, that's show biz. Lotta history there.

Rush is a reason talk radio is foundering. Not the only reason but a big part of it.

Producers have been trying to tweak the show as long as rumors have floating around about Gregory leaving - and probably longer. To keep Gregory at this point would have been like WJM-TV firing everybody but Ted.

MTP was a revolving door before Russert - actually between Spivak and Russert. This Week has also been in and out since Brinkley left. Scheiffer is the only stable presence on these Sunday morning insider cred circle jerks.

The funny part to me, in the context of NBC seeking more "insider cred" is the fact that MTP has been the #1 talk show inside the beltway, in Washington DC. By a wide margin. NBC is #1, and Fox News Sunday is #2, followed by Face The Nation and This Week. NBC's problem isn't inside the beltway. It's in the flyover states.

I thought complaints like this were to be handled under the new rules using "report post." Or PM.

What do you think of all the Radio Disney threads?

It's not a complaint. I don't want or expect the moderators to do anything about such a minor thing. I was just hoping that those who read my kvetch might bear it in mind when they contemplate launching a new thread when there's already an existing thread on the topic.

An hour of Chuck Todd every week? Does that fall under the term "cruel and unusual punishment"? Best of luck to David Gregory but unfortunately for him, he actually asked tough, intelligent questions of his guests. Maybe he'll pop up on anther network.

Avid, I know you've singled out a thread of mine on this point. I have posted duplicate threads in the past. So have a lot of people. I doubt it's deliberate. Maybe we don't notice the other post, especially if it's dropped down the page. Maybe the wording of the first headline doesn't connect. I won't speak for OP but possibly he was thinking about Gregory getting the ax and rushing to share the news here, and a headline about Todd just didn't ring any bells. A little slack, please. Some day you may start a "duplicate," too.

Mistakes happen. I make them. Everyone makes them. One way to avoid mistakes is to be watchful. If more participants would most gentle reminders, then people wouldn't do things. For example, there was a time when almost all internet forums were full of people typing in all caps. But when someone would do that, many folks would simply include in their replies, "You don't have to SHOUT. We can hear you just fine." In a short period of time, people realized that all caps was shouting, and they stopped. If more of us would make everyone aware that launching duplicate threads is regarded as favorably as typing in all caps or farting in an elevator, fewer people would launch duplicate threads. It worked on posting in all caps. It's had some positive effect on farting in elevators. It can help reduce the number of duplicate threads. Nothing will eliminate them, but a reduction would be a good thing.

Regarding ALL CAPS, when I first used computers, you had to use them. Lower case letters didn't work.

Now, sonny, when I was yer age, computers filled these great big rooms. We had something that looked like this one (yes, but laptops are too small) but it was a "terminal". It couldn't do anything. You typed and sent it to the big computer. The big computer would send you something back. And that was cutting edge then. In the same room there was what we call a teletype ...

Politico is reporting that Gregory is talking with CNN. No big surprise. He worked for the guy who now runs the place. I'm not sure it will make a big improvement at CNN, but it won't hurt.

I agree it will be a big improvement for CNN, in order for their parent company Time Warner to remain independent, (when I mean by independent is avoiding getting swallowed up by somebody like Fox, Comcast, or Disney) they not only got to make improvements on CNN, but also on the Turner channels (TNT, TBS, & TruTV) as well.
