I doubt very much that he's making it up. He knows it sounds odd, which is why he mentioned that he knows it sounds crazy before he even started telling the story. He also has nothing to gain by lying about it.

I've had similar occurrences happen like that, where I was thinking about a famous person hours before their death was reported.

It's just an odd coincidence, that's all.
