Both services start on Monday Aug. 18 but they're both on the air now, running continuous promos. Grit TV is older war and Western movies. Escape (in the logo, the P is elevated) looks like mostly suspense movies and thrillers.
Both 41 WXTV and 68 WFUT are owned by Univision. The main channels are in Spanish but 68 already has Get TV, another classic movie channel in English, on 68.3. And 41.3 is also showing as a blank screen on my TV, with no description on what network it airs, but the words "The Newlywed Game" appearing as the show title. So Univision probably has plans for it too.
Odd that a Spanish broadcaster is putting English language subchannels on the air in NYC. But My Network WWOR-TV has Mundo Fox as subchannel 9.4. And for a while, WPIX 11 had LATV as a subchannel, so I guess it goes both ways.
So are these subchannels aiming at an audience that doesn't have cable, so are willing to watch old movies and TV shows from decades ago? Or do they hope to be carried by cable, and are mainly using these subchannels to get carriage? It is amazing how many classic movie and TV subchannels that are available these days. Clearly Me-TV and Antenna TV are the best, but the others are trying.
