Charter HD Cable Tuner Question

I've noticed in the last couple of days that Charter in Jackson, TN has changed most of the basic channels that were still in analog in the range under 200 to the HD versions, but the analog channels are still coming in on my old SD sets, and the HD channels are still available in the 700 to 900 range. Is this possible because the lower numbered channels are being mapped to the HD positions now? This is just a guess because I have HD tuners on my HD sets, and my older sets are still connected without a tuner box. Also, is this an indication that Charter will be getting rid of the analog channels soon and I'll need tuners on all my sets? Thanks! :rolleyes:
 
Charter added on an auto-tune feature to their HD-compatible boxes in the last few months which automatically tunes the lower-numbered analog slots to their HD equivalents to make things easier for those who haven't gotten used to the HD tiers. If you turn off the feature using Menu>>>Setup>>>Guide Setup>>>Tune to HDTV>>>Off (Motorola BTW; not sure with Cisco/SciAtlanta), it resumes the previous behavior of tuning to the regular SD versions. It's kind of annoying though if you have their DVR with little space and would rather record the lower-space SD version than the DVR-eating HD versions.

Charter would like to move all systems to all-digital by the end of this year. That may be too optimistic of a goal, but rest assured, at some point in the future all remaining analog and clear QAM digital will go away. At that point, all of your TVs will require a Charter-supplied tuner or card. Charter typically notifies customers at least a month in advance of the changes.

I checked and you're right. I'd rather keep it that way. My wife is definitely one who can't get used to the HD tier. :rolleyes: Thanks for the info! :)

I remember a technician for Charter telling me that they would be all digital by the end of 2010, but that didn't happen. I guess they're closet than ever to it happening though.
 
TiVo told me everything would be all-digital by the end of 2013. I had a man come and upgrade, and then I found out I only needed the upgrade for three channels I didn't want. My new TiVo would work fine without the changes. Time Warner upgraded in Myrtle Beach but not here.

Charter did change to all-digital in the N.C. mountains. I had assumed that meant it was being done everywhere.

The old joke about being too lazy to change the channel if you lose your remote is no longer funny. Each TV hooked up to TiVo requires a remote to change channels, just as each TV hooked up to a converter box does. But I keep each remote in one place all the time.
 
For Charter in Northern Michigan, TVs with a newer HD box have an autotune feature on most channels which defaults to the HD carrier. My parents have the original Charter digital (non-HD) box and it gives a fuzzy picture (the TV is from 1992 as well).
