107.7 Buffalo

tbolt909

Banned
107.7 is reaching the one year mark in its current format.
Ratings have been very poor.

Format is clearly aimed at 21-35 year olds who are nowhere to
be found. Most of that age group is probably listening to
Country or Hip Hop.
However, the Rock crowd needs something different.

People here have discussed how Classic Rock stations need
To get "younger".
The former Lake format actually was doing that by playing
Woodstock Era bands, 80s - 90s Alternative and new AAA artists.
That approach attracted a 25-55 year old Rock audience...

It won't be #1, but it would probably triple their current numbers...

It's curious that you've been overly negative about The Lake and
yet praise stale formats like Q107 and 97.

Personal tastes can differ, but at least The Lake attempted to
offer Rock listeners a wider variety of quality music without
any SKYNRD, BOSTON, STYX, etc. or the typical Classic Rock
Macho BS.

In the world of corporate radio, quality programming is rare.
Current ratings don't come close to The Lake's numbers...

In all likelihood Alt 107.7 (or Alt-Control-Delete 107.7) will be around for at least another year, probably two, as David Field is enamored with the format. It's on a number of other E-com FMs. If it doesn't move the needle in Buffalo (or Rochester), Entercom will replace it. I think it needs to place at least top 5 Men 18-49 in Buffalo to work. That noted, Field years ago was enamored by the Lake format, so who knows, maybe that love affair will be re-kindled, but not for at least another year or two. In the meantime, perhaps Sirius would work for you.

If you think that Q107 is stale, you haven't been listening. There's been a considerable shift in music there in the last year. They have some excellent personalities as well.

If the stilted presentation of all-over-the-road music without any context and precious little local input is what you consider "quality programming", you likely should spend the monthly fee for satellite. The Lake was NOT a good radio station. For a while, it was an interesting radio station, but it could have been much more with a better PD. It got less interesting as it went on.

GOOD Radio is open to different interpretation.
The Lake had local content and allowed local musicians to
perform live.

All that matters is that Entercom has tried 3 formats on 107.7 and
The Lake had the most success.
Maybe an updated format similar to it could improve their situation...

I don't get it, The Lake still exists! It is available online streaming and for those that have HD radio and are sitting in one place with good signal can get it on 107.7 HD2. The signal is so poor to the City of Buffalo and all points south that HD does not stay locked, but that is what "smart phones" are for right?

What about a country format? WYRK has the format to itself, it should not be that hard to steal a 3 or 4 share from them. Use the translator they bought (104.7) for a good signal in the City and the Northtowns, and 107.7 gives them decent coverage in the rest of the market. Country is the one format that is still growing nationally, why Buffalo can't support 2 Country stations is unbelievable to me. Entercom is flipping stations to country in other markets, so why not here?

WNUC was a different time, and a different place. Country wasn't as fragmented in the '90s, and didn't have as big an audience as it does now. Entercom won't go country on 107.7 because it might take just as many shares from WBEE in Rochester - their cash cow in that market. It doesn't make sense to compete with yourself. The only real option is a niche format because any successful mainstream format will just be co-opted by a full-market signal. So, pick whatever niche you want, and hope for a 2-share.

How many people actually listen to WBEN on its low power translator? Probably fewer than listened to the more powerful 107.7. Family Life programming was on 104.7 at last check a few minutes ago. FM 107.7 would be a good frequency for a locally owned radio station that serves communities covered by a strong signal like Hamburg, West Seneca, Lancaster, East Aurora and Orchard Park, but that ship has long ago sailed.

David Field ignored the fact that Buffalo demographics are not the same
as Seattle or Portland.
His "love" of the current format may fade...

It's a shame the format's not being well received, as a fan of the format, I think it's one of the most interesting alternative stations in the country--very deep playlist and very very early on new music adoption. They've also been amazingly supportive of the local music scene.

Deep?? The Alternative format is a repetitive Rock Top 40.
What's left of the record labels push product into station playlists.
Both sides reek of desperation.

Again, the format is ill conceived for Buffalo demographics.
A niche format that blends AAA artists and selective heritage rockers would
probably find an audience like The Lake had.

Look at how poorly JACK is doing on a great signal.
The Lake was a 3 share or better on a hobbled one...

107.7 alt buffalo

I like the alternative buffalo format, seeing as it is unique in a market saturated with college campuses (UB, Buff State, NU, St. Bonaventure) where there are high populations of their target demographic. Its signal reaches remarkably distant in the east even covering campuses well to the east like SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo better than Rochester's WZNE. Prior to Alt's sign on, there hadn't been a true alternative station in the market since the early days of WEDG (before they became a metal/active rock station). They play a great mix of new and classic alt rock including the deeper tracks of mainstream artists that most rock/alternatives would never think of adding to their playlist. I'm all for keeping WLKK in their current format...

The college campuses may have the students, but the ratings say
They are NOT listening to 107.7.
The current format has averaged a 1.2 rating.
The Lake format had 3 and 4 shares.

A Quality Heritage Rock/AAA format would better serve the demographics in
Western NY. Corporate may covet 18-25 year olds, but they aren't buying.
Another Entercom misfire...
