Dick Bartley is Leaving WCBS-FM

Just a reminder, tomorrow Dick Bartley will do his final show on CBS-FM hosting the "Classic Countdown". He will continue to do the "Classic Countdown" on many different stations not just CBS-FM. He will continue to do "Rock & Roll's Greatest Hits" on WGNY-FM's "Fox Oldies" in the Hudson Valley playing 4 hours of classic hits instead of oldies. I love Dick Bartley so much, and I'm a huge fan, I also remember listening to that show when it was WHUD back in the late 90's until the station pulled the plug on that show back in 2005 following the CBS-FM's "Jack" fiasco. I enjoyed listening to Dick Bartley a lot on "Fox Oldies" and it does a great job, and the show is focusing on Stevie Wonder on the show.

And like I said, if Dick Bartley comes on tomorrow to do the final "Classic Countdown" show, I will be recording it and I will be posting it after the show.

Dick Bartley's farewell message to his WCBS-FM listeners is posted on his website - link: http://dickbartley.com/cbs_farewell.htm

His show will depart and in essence make way for Scott Shannon's new United Stations syndicated 4 hour program "America's Greatest Hits" that will debut on the weekend of October 18-19, 2014 on CBS Radio's 10 Classic Hits stations including WCBS-FM and KRTH (K-Earth 101) Los Angeles.

No word yet if Scott's show will air in Bartley's old time slot (Sunday evenings from 8PM-Midnight) or if it will air at some other time on Saturday or Sunday which would shift the jock schedule.

Hmm...reduced to two internationally popular rock & roll radio shows plus the American Armed Forces Radio Network. Well, at least he posted something on his website this time to give his audience a heads up.

Please do the America's Greatest Hits with Scott Shannon on Sunday 8PM on CBS-FM POR FAAAAAAVOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRR!!!

I think I read that Scott Shannon's show will air Sundays from 7am-11am om WCBS-FM.

Such A Shame

....and now they've killed my favorite show on the station. Very disappointed in the direction of CBS-FM but understand we're not the desired demographics anymore. Loved Dick's show on Sunday night.

At least during Dick Bartley's show you heard a lot good 70s and 80s hits never played at other times of the week. Over the years Including pre-Jack there have been few syndicated shows on WCBS-FM

Not for anything, but nobody knows their demographic, including them. Having listened to Dick Bartley programs for somewhat over a little more than about 25 years, having seen/heard him come and go, he is a businessman with an agent, and he happens to love headphones and microphone, but does not necessarily love playing corporation. The right contracts are more durable. He has well covered all demographics during that time. That said....

This makes sense - I figured it would be either Saturday or Sunday mornings since that's where Scott's audience would be most likely to find him.

TBD: where Sue O'Neal winds up - either Sunday evenings 8pm-Midnight or possibly altering the air shifts throughout the day.
Currently Sue is on 7am-11am, Pat St. John from 11am-3pm, Al Bernstein from 3pm-8pm.

We'll see where the show lands. Sundays at 8pm is the easy choice for CBS-FM; however, as PJC suggests they may want to capitalize on Shannon's
morning popularity and use him there 6 days a week.

Generally Bartley's show towards the end had been a 50/50 split of 70s/80s music programmed in 2 hour blocks.
Apparently more 80s will be added to the mix so that somewhere around 2/3 of Shannon's show will be 80s with some 70s and the occasional 60s song.
The show's structure looks like 4 one hour blocks each containing a mini countdown with 2 long commercial breaks each hour.
A very format friendly show for Classic Hits stations to pick up.

Confirmed in David Hinckley's NY Daily News radio column from Monday 10/6/2014 (linked above) that Scott Shannon's new syndicated offering will air on Sunday mornings from 7am-11am with Sunday evenings being regular programming. (Story is second news item in column.)

As jt2 mentioned above, CBS-FM PD Jim Ryan "notes this means Shannon will now wake up the city six days a week instead of five."

On Sunday evening 10/5/2014 Charlie Burger was on from 8pm-Midnight. He has filled in previously at CBS-FM.

As jt2 also mentioned, see USRN Scott Shannon America's Greatest Hits show page which includes links to the format clock and sample playlist:

Thanks for the link to Dick Bartley's message. Just to keep in mind on "Fox Oldies", Dick Bartley is hosting "Rock & Roll's Greatest Hits" every Saturday from 7 PM until 11 PM followed by "When Radio Was" where they are playing Old Time Radio from Jack Benny to "The Lone Ranger". I remember listening to "Rock & Roll's Greatest Hits" when it was usually heard on WHUD from the late 90's until 2005 when WHUD pulled the plug, but thankfully "Fox Oldies" in the Hudson Valley is carrying Dick Bartley's show. Instead playing music from the 50's and 60's music, they're playing 3-hours of classic hits from the 70's and 80's which is a specialty show for Saturday nights. Right now, I'm listening to Richie Norris on "Magic 590" in Albany where he is hosting "Saturday Night at the Oldies" for 6 hours.

Please do the America's Greatest Hits with Scott Shannon on Sunday 8PM on CBS-FM POR FAAAAAAVOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRR!!!

You have to wait until next week when Scott Shannon's "America's Greatest Hits" comes on. It's not going to be on at 8 PM, it's going to be on Sunday mornings from 7 AM until 11 AM. No word when one of the jocks will be replacing Dick Bartley. Last week, Charlie Berger did an excellent show on WCBS-FM where he took over Dick Bartley's time slot, hopefully Charlie Berger will be on permanently on Sunday nights.

About 10 minutes ago, I began recording the first "America's Greatest Hits" with Scott Shannon, and guest what? Sue O'Neil is on instead of Shannon. I don't know what what happened to Scott Shannon's "America's Greatest Hits". It was supposed to debut today on CBS-FM, but Sue O'Neil is on now. But according to the USRN's site saying that the show is coming in November. Looks like the show gets pushed back to November instead of today. No date has still announced yet, will have another month until the show premieres.

The show also was not on other CBS stations in Chicago or Orlando that advertised a start time for the show. The United Stations web site was updated only in the last 24 hours promoting a start date in November. Previously the site said coming Oct. 18-19.

Anything to destroy the listening experience for those who enjoy classic hits on Sunday evenings. Another one bites the dust.
Adios CBS-FM, it was great listening to you online while it lasted.

Next....
