Krth 101 personality changes - weekends purged?

Playing the same new songs over and over is one thing. But you don't play the same old songs over and over for 25 years straight when there are so many songs from the 80's.

But only a few of those songs from the 80's were hits and fewer still are still hits today.

Didn't I read once on one of these boards that Clear Channel Classic Hits stations that display on-air playlists list everything on their respective hard drives, not necessarily what's in current rotation? Or, is that incorrect?

That is not true. Why in the world would they want to do that?

Mister ChannelFlipper, let's see if all of this will fit in a single post. Here is a sample of what's been played on KRTH in the past four days.
I should point out that we have already proven that giving us the chart positions is meaningless to the discussion, so I call "troll" on that part of your post, Steve.

Several iHeart Media stations (the former Clear Channel) have playlists posted on their websites and I've found that every one includes songs which are not being played. Most of them are in the 300s and 400s. I don't know why they're listed. Ignore such playlists and look for station websites, such as that of KRTH, which show "Last played."

Semoochie (not his real name) pointed out that I neglected to include the original chart entry for a Bob Seger song. Here 'tis:

Old Time Rock & Roll - Bob Seger (28/1979, 48/1983)

KRTH plays Bob Marley's Jamming one or two times a day. Island Records released the song as both a 45-rpm single and a 12-inch single in 1977 but it never charted. Why is it now being played on KRTH? Or maybe I should ask: Hey, mon, why is it now being played on KRTH, mon?

K.M., I have compiled dozens of lists from dozens of radio stations and XM channels. Except for one list of Christian contemporary songs, all the lists include chart data. Most of them have been posted on XMFan.com. I'm not asking anyone here to discuss chart positions. We all know that stations are going to play the biggest hits which still have appeal. I just wonder how a few low-charting songs have somehow managed to have appeal today. In the case of the non-charting 1977 Bob Marley song, I never heard it at all until KRTH started playing it. Who decided to add it to the playlist...and why? And if you have to think of me as a troll, can I at least be one of the cute little trolls from Frozen? Thank you.

Drake Chenault played Bob Marley and the Wailers as currents in 1977. I can still hear Billy Moore doing the Intro! I guess you are too young there Steve?

Songs that didn't chart at all yet have appeal these days... didn't we use to call those "album cuts?"

I knew I wasn't crazy.

Better yet, isn't the Mediabase online listing for a station more accurate?

You know perfectly well why, Steve, unless you didn't read the dozens of posts explaining how music research works.

I'm sorry, but I really have to ask if you are deliberately playing "dumb" (because I know that you aren't) to fan the flames of this increasingly pointless discussion.

Bob Marley was a KROQ staple for years. Although I don't listen to the station much, I have also heard it on Alt 98.7 over the years as well. His music still resonates with alternative fans of all ages, so its inclusion on KRTH seems appropriate. This is both an example of the tremendous overlap between Jack and K-Earth, as Jack plays it too, and perhaps an instance where it included in ethnic LA and probably not in less ethnic Topeka Kansas.

Question for the experts: In regard to the research on what songs are chosen for Classic Hits radio, I find it interesting when some obvious choices are ignored. For example, I had wondered for years why "Love Will Keep Us Together" by the Captain & Tenille was never heard on the Oldies or Classic Hits stations I listen to. I know it was widely hated in its day by some - probably because it was so overplayed on Top 40 radio when it was new. But it's one of those catchy upbeat tunes that sticks in everybody's brain -seems perfect for Classic Hits.

So I was surprised to hear it recently on "Big 103.7" (Bay Area) after such a long absence, and it seems to be in frequent rotation now.

Was the song 'rehabilitated?' What caused it to be rejected for so long, and why is it back now?

Love Will Keep Us Together seems to be the only positive testing song by the Captain & Tennille on any classic hits station. The standards stations I believe are also playing Do That To Me One More Time and, maybe, The Way That I Want To Touch You.

At least "Love Will Keep Us Together" is better than <gasp> "Muskrat Love." <end of gasp>

I had forgotten that the Captain & "Schlemiel" (as some overly clever wags used to refer to them - had any other hits except Love Will Keep Us Together.

Muskrat Love...arrrrrugggggh! ( indcates involunary shivers running up spine).

Oh, heck, Llew....just sticking with the ones that went top 10:

Love Will Keep Us Together
The Way I Want To Touch You
Lonely Night (Angel Face)
Shop Around
Muskrat Love
You Never Done It Like That
Do That To Me One More Time

MadMan, nobody has called me "young" since the William McKinley administration! Well.....okay, I'm not that old.....but I'm not really young either. Anyway, in 1977 I listened to KHJ, KIIS, KKDJ, KTNQ, KDAY,KMET, KLAC and KGBS-FM. I never heard the Bob Marley song on any of them. I appreciate ChannelFlipper's reply. And no, K.M., I'm not playing dumb. Since I had never heard Jamming before, I honestly couldn't understand why KRTH would be playing it so often in 2014. If I seem dumb sometimes, it could be because I am dumb sometimes.

eriedj, did you ever hear Por Amor Viveremos, the Spanish-language version of Love Will Keep Us Together? It was recorded over the original backing track, so while the Captain & Tennille were singing "Yo soy, yo soy, yo soy," the background singers were singing "I will, I will, I will." That sounded bad. Couldn't A&M have afforded to re-record the background vocals? The song peaked at #49 just two months after the original version spent six weeks at number one.
