Russ Cassell Passes Away

It's very sad when we loose one of our own.....a Brother in Broadcasting(pre-corp-ruin). Mr. Cassell, and I were not friends, but mere acquaintances. We knew well of each other, with a genuine mutual respect. Having his respect meant something to me. The truth is we only met twice: Once at WFBC, when I was visiting to pick-up a dub, and the other, a somewhat lengthy, over coffee, discussion, late one night at "Fall(down) For Greenville"; one of the City's annual public drunks. He told me things that were said about me, and I rifled back.....it was thick, and we actually made each other laugh. He was a Great man! Later, in '94, he would phone me at my Record Store, stating that he had recommended me to replace him at WBFM, as he was leaving to attempt "Talk Radio". I'd say he did more than just Attempt! We even talked about teaming-up for a "Russ & Scooter" Morning show, but the Talk thing started really happening for him, and I was again training young guys for the Pro Wrestling indy curcuit.....no spare time for either of us. Was he a Spiritual man? I can't confirm, but merely suspect....that he was. If so, I'll see him again, and I know that the coffee will be better, then.

I am sorry russ passed away too its another signal that we are getting older and not even a 60 year old man is bullet proof. although he was known as a conservative talk show host russ was a pretty good jock in the wqok days. he became and was successful as a talk show host after foothills 104.9 failed his ego was as large as he was in public I hope he did not take it home with him

Unfortunately, Russ will be remembered by most for being an old, self-centered, curmodgeony talk show host instead of the jock he was in the WQOK and WFBC days.

WORD needs to bring Laura Ingraham back and fire all of the remaining local "talent."

RIP Russ.

Sadly, I have to agree with this. Russ had a great voice for radio, but his lambasting of listeners through his period as a talk show host was just appalling. I remember as an education reporter for the Greenville News back in the early '90s, Russ would even blast me on the radio. I was far from biased as a reporter but apparently even presenting a balanced point of view was not enough for him.

Anyway, I know he struggled with cancer and I still feel for him and his family.
