The End and pre-2000 music

107.7 the End has dropped (at least for now) its noon "flashback" hour. This, plus listening to the End most of today, got me wondering if the End could or should drop pre-2000 music. Those old grunge warhorses sound so out of place amongst the keyboard heavy indie sound that dominates the End's playlist. Do you think the End should drop grunge era music?

Should they? I wouldn't
Will they? Oh, they certainly will.

The End went through a change already with their recent "2 Minute Promise" branding last summer. It seems now like they are much like KNRK in Portland, a modern alternative rock station.

Entercom seems to be holding out or cant sell the End, its too bad. They broke a lot of new artists, Seattle was in the spotlight, their dj's were top notch. I think it will go the way of another Entercom property 103.7. The 80's 90's alternative was, is, better then what is offered now for the most part. Foster the People are past tense now compared to the Black Keys who will be replaced by...

Actually, I've been barely listening to The End for some time now. I'd like more of mix of '80s and '90s "Resurrection" music. But at 45, I guess I'm out of the demo for The End. Too bad, I remember listening to the station on just about the first day.

What are you guys talking about? The End is doing fine in the latest ratings. The 2 minute promise is working. The type of music they are playing is very hot right now. They should just like KNRK because they are sister stations owned by the same company.

I think it IS time for The End to move away from "grunge" (they should have started doing that 10, even 15 years ago.) That stuff belongs on KZOK now, not The End. Grunge is today's Classic Rock. Modern Rock is supposed to be MODERN.

Have to remember that most of the comments on this board aren't based on metrics such as ratings or sales performance, they're based on personal tastes.

Well stated.

I agree. However, I think its a shame when you can get a carbon copy radio dial in every US city. "The End" used to be a unique radio station many moons ago.

Because The End plays Foo Fighters, Milky Chance and Black Keys, no other radio station in the country should play those three artists?

I think he was referring to the early '90s when everything Seattle was HUGE and KNDD was in the thick of it. KNDD was really edgy and sometimes unpredictable in those days. It was really refreshing to hear that kind of radio.

No, but it was cool when KNDD featured songs that many other alternative radio stations wouldn't play. Evolution of the format is fine, but it just seems like the playlist has tightened up quite a bit. I guess that is their only way to satisfy advertisers who want see consistent cumes.

Various music takes turns being HOT. Country has been consistently hot/crossover - right now this five minutes Alternative is one of the hotter types so music that you heard almost exclusively on KNDD a few years ago like the Lumineers or Foster the People are now played everywhere (else). It goes in cycles. I personally like it that the End keeps some of older/deep track stuff in the playlist where else are you going to hear something like Gary Jules "Mad World' or a random tune like that on any other terrestrial station. As far as it being everywhere- success breeds more success.
