Is this translator actually on the air? I ask because I see that it is listed as such, but I'm a pretty regular listener of 103-7 and have yet to hear any mention of the translator in conjunction with the standard "103-7 KHJK-La Porte/Houston" that is run on the TOH. I realize that it is only required to identify the translator 3x a day, but I'll be darned if I've ever heard it.

Is it on the air and actually relaying 103-7, or is this another phantom translator that snuck in under the radar by claiming it's rebroadcasting a full power signal that it actually isn't?

Cumulus never had this translator attached to 103-7, so where did it originate? Is KHJK's main signal that bad in Pinehurst/Orange that it requires 96-5? Last I checked, it was serviceable enough in a car to cross the State line on 10.

You can ID a translator silently using FSK every hour. Crown translators have this built in.

EMF put this translator on in Vinton to carry K-Love via KLBT in 2004 and it looks like it moved to Pinehurst to carry Air 1 via KHJK in 2013.

EMF is known for doing things right.

Agree on EMF doing things right, but then again so does Salem, and it didn't stop someone from attempting a piggyback on their KKHT for a Fairbanks translator. I was wondering if this was along the same lines as that situation, or like the one that claimed to be affiliated with you guys on KGLK's .3.

I did not know that an identification could be done silently on a translator. Thanks for the heads up, John. I always appreciate the knowledge you bring to the table on these such things. :)

Its NOT on the air....it has a license but the tower owner that they are licensed to says NOPE, no colocation at all....THEY LIED....imagine that.....

It was near Vinton La originally.......then filed to moved....but with 103.7 now Air 1, its not needed as 103.7 covers the area and then some....it HAS been on the air but I am not sure if the Vinton site is still on..

The difference is that EMF is the licensee of K243AV and the stations that it has rebroadcast. That translator is worth more to them on the air than it is off. :)

You can also do audible Morse code IDs hourly on translators. Here's a creative way to do it: http://www.jingles.com/audio/stash/WNSR-TN15.mp3

NO you cannot......Part 74 rules requires either audible VOICE IDs every hour (or at certain times during the day) from the main signal OR you can Morse Code ID EVERY HOUR in only TWO ways.....FSK shift of the translator signal (in squarewave FSK.....so it can be distinguished from normal audio) OR 30% AM of the FM xlator signal....

MCW from the MAIN station is NOT Legal though people claim it is.....NOT according to the Part 74.....and several FCC EICs I know.....they HAVE cited stations before....

Wow, so you're saying EMF is participating in these translator shenanigans too? I sure hate to hear that. So how long did it actually transmit from this side of the State line? I knew that sounded completely redundant given the reach of KHJK's signal towards Louisiana.

NEVER has transmitted from TX side of the line...I havent checked to see if its still in Vinton..may do that tomorrow....the tower they CLAIM to be on in the TX license is a Florida Pipeline Co microwave tower...their director of operations confirmed they are NOT on that tower nor have any agreement or proposal to do so!

Its bad enough they ruined 103.7 and removed it from my radio presets. EMF is maybe the largest translator abuser in the nation?

The Vinton site is still on the air....though they are no longer licensed for it..The license site off HWY 105 south of Vidor will never let them on the tower.....hmmmm yep, time for Form 2000
